You would think that they would be able to pressure test their tanks before shipping them out.
kinda sucks to make the customer have to repair any manufacturing flaws before being able to use it.

thank you htown to post on new steel tanks
as far as I know there's a number of tank replicas around and it seems those coming from Pakistan are better and closer to the originals, while those coming from India are worse made..
anyway, it would be good to hear the opinions of the people who already purchased them for advises and for pics!

Hi- have you thought about a good used tank? My man Yoshi at The Garage Company here in Los Angeles made me a great deal on a good, dentless, rustless steel tank last year. Call him at 310-821-1793

He's a stand-up guy, honest, fair. Tell him Eric sent you- he'll ask "Eric who?" :-)

thank you! I will for sure..

I purchased one made in Pakistan that i have yet to mount, The lines on it do not even come close to the original tanks. I am going to try to use some filler and try to get it to at least come close to a roadster tank, And the so called oil is a total pain in the ass to get out of it. It's on the inside too. I would say to get an original one and make it right. Sorry but I feel I wasted my money on it. Chuck.

Seems to me somebody should call these guys and ask who is making the tanks. No reason to assume it is offshore unless you ask.

Russ

The box mine was in was marked Pakistan, And the person selling it listed it as being made there. I too have heard that they are also made in India, But it would be nice if someone could make them that were better quality.

mmmmmm id also be interested to find out about the norvil alloy interstate tank, unless someones seen one first hand its hard to take someone elses word, id love to know if the shape/lines are correct???

I've asked (via email) - they have responded to my previous questions so if I get an answer i'll post it.

The steel reproduction tank I have seen in my local brit bike shop, is not a faithfull copy. The crease in the side of the roadster tank is pathetic. And I think you could play around with as much filer as you like, but would not be able to get the lines right. I bought a secondhand steel, with rough paint for around $200 when I removed the paint it had some bumps and hollows on the left side, but atleast I had a god right side to match up the left to with some filler and planishing the high spots.
It would be great if some decent new reproductions were available, they were made in Italy originally I beleive, I wonder if someonr over their still makes them?

Cheers Richard

Try to find an orig at a swap meet or through networking.
I was very very fortunate to find my 1972-73 era steel tank.
The seller listed it on Ebay. He stripped it so I was able to see what was under the hood.
I bid $300.00 and won. Tank was in great shape and my painter had little to no work and it held gas like
it was designed to imagine that?
Be very careful of painted over tanks listed as orig. Just ask Debbie on this forum.
There are some polished turds lurking around for unsuspecting restorers.
1973 and newer are all metal in the states so continue to look with a purpose and one will avail itself.
The after market ones I'm hearing way to much issues to justify my hard earned $$$.

Yup, I got totally screwed on an ebay Interstate tank. Smashed all to hell and the damage concealed with a couple of quarts of bondo and a crappy paint job.

Best to buy one that has been stripped to bare metal so you can see what you're getting. If it has paint, go over every inch of it with a magnet before settling on a price. (That would have to be done face to face, obviously).

It's best to avoid fleabay in general, unless there is something you need that you absolutely can't find anywhere else. Buy your new parts from a reputable dealer who stands behind what they sell. For used parts, check with your fellow club members.

It's unfortunate the Chinese haven't gotten into the Norton tanks. They've been producing some really first rate Triumph tanks.
At any rate here's what I got from Walridge. I'd rate it maybe 7 out of 10. If you know the differances between the original
glass and steel tanks you'll see it's a little bit of both. The inside was HORRIBLY rusted, but tested leak free. I got a couple of
pints of Evap-o-Rust. As you can see from the candy corn shape on the bottom. The stuff really does work. But I'd need to drop
it in a vat of the stuff for a week.
This is an India tank. I've not heard anyone being happy so far with a Pakistan tank.

That one doesn't look too bad in the photos. It looks like it should clean up ok and the shape looks a lot more like the originals than the Pakistan tanks do.

Looks like the filler neck is on crooked though. You might want to see if the cap fits before painting it. I've heard of that being a problem sometimes. You don't want to spend money on a nice paint job only to find the cap won't close.

I have been told the pakistan tanks were better than indians.. but it seems I was completely wrong..

But we are still awaiting pix of The Genuine Tank from our pals at Andover.
Mr Andover posts here and would do us loyalists a solid if he spoke up. He
doesnt like pattern crap any more than we do and we do, and will be happy
to, support him if his tanks are the real deal.
Finding a good used tank, esp a Interstate, isnt that easy. If you'd
like to make a liar of me, GREAT, send me an offer! :-)
