Well, what started out as a bit of consulting has now turned into a little business. For those that were at the “Save a Horse Rally” in Wyoming might remember the new digitally enhanced analog faced Smiths Norton gauges I showed around at the banquet and at the campsites. These were the first new Smiths gauges to be introduced in the USA and Canada and were shipped from the UK directly to my hotel at the rally. So now it seems I am the distributer for the Western Hemisphere of these fine gauges. I introduced them in a bigger way at the Mid America Auction in Las Vegas and essentially sold out of everything I had except for some Commando gauges (must have been a bigger Triumph/BSA crowd there). I am currently waiting for the next shipment. If anyone has any interest, the website is http://www.smithsgaugesusa.com or you can contact me at tom@smithsgaugesusa.com And sorry, I don’t do any repairs on the magnetic or chronometric ones. I have gauges in KPH on order as well. I will have a display at the Clubman All British Motorcycle Show in San Jose as well as all the AHRMA races I'll be racing at.

Cheers,

I just want to put a plug in for Tom's new gauges.

They look right, they fit right and they work perfectly. Jim

Yes it will. Jim

Guess I might as well sell off my cores before the market for them falls apart!

I have a question concerning a Joe Hunt application and these Tachs. Joe Hunt sells their Tach Signal Converter.
Does the HT-Sensor/Amplifier replace this converter? And is this a simple matter of wire tying or mounting the HT sensor close to one of the plug wires?

Two more things to add to the "upgrade list". My rebuild is going to end up costing as much as Jerry's, but what the hell its only money I'm 67 and can't take it with me.

I had a good look at these gauges at the Wyoming Rally,,,and will confirm that they are cosmetically perfect in every way. Next time my "gear" style gauges crap out, I'm going with these.

Hi Pete,

You would attach the sensor directly to the spark plug lead (HT lead.) There would be no need to use the Joe Hunt signal converter as that would be redundant. We hope to update the website tonight and will have the HT sensor (spark plug wire) installation instructions included with that update. I am waiting for a shipment of these along with the chronometrics, black and grey face. There are both 8,000 and 10,000 rpm chronometrics on order also. Have a supply of all three Commando speedometers and tachometers in stock though. I have been working with them on a new race tach for my Norton and hope some of the features I've asked for will be included. It will not need to be isolated for vibration like my Scitsu and can be hard flush mounted in a race fairing.

Cheers,

Tom

Thanks Tom. Please feel free to PM me when the HT sensors arrive and put my name on one, along with a "Globe" tach.

I met Tom and saw his products at the MidAmerica/Mecum auction. Nice guy, and the guages are high-quality beauties.

Hi Pete,

Got the link for hooking up the HT sensor/amplifier from the magneto to the tach up on the website. It's now located on the "Tech Page" on the right side under "Operating Instructions" and "HT Sensor" http://kullendesign.com/smithgaugewebsite/tech/ Please feel free to post me any questions and I will try to get the website updated to address them.

Thanks for the compliments Jim and Lars. :D I hope to start a new section on the website showing customers bikes with the new gauges as they get sent to me along with different ideas for mounting the reed switches for the speedometer if not using the hall sensor on the stock rear axle gear drive.

Cheers,

Tom

Hi, is it possible to use the grey wire on the Altair PAZON which is dedicated to electronic tacho, but not for Scitsu and Krober??

The difference between the two wires in the Smiths loom is filtering, the black/white wire has more receptivity to a smaller signal so is often used for ECU output but some bikes/systems may find the blue/red wire is preferable.

I will be seeing my new tach and HT sensor tomorrow.

I didn't like the idea of just a cap and gasket over the crank case hole.
I decided to go this way. The 11/16 diameter hole (actually .691) of the drive hole made this fairly easy to do with the 11/16x9/16x1/16 oring. The outside is .686, oring slot is .576 diameter, slot width is .093.
