Hi All, I,am putting new rings in my 850 commando. They are .020 over and are being installed on the Jap pistons. The problem is there are no instructions on which way the two top rings are to be placed. No markings on the rings but they both have a taper on the edge next to the piston. Does this taper go down on the first ring and up on the second ring or some other way?

If you don't have the repair manual to look at the gap of the top ring is centered on the piston front and the gap of the lower compression ring is centered on the back.
Joint of corrugated oil ring on side lining up with wrist pin and oil scraper joints 1" away from the corrugated joint. One frontwards and the other backwards from the corrugated joint.

Yes both chamfers facing up, DON,T OVER LAP THE OILRING EXPANDER :!: :!: ,as the compression rings will spin in the ring lands during running dont get to carried away with their alignment, I never put the gaps front and rear though, trying to keep them away from the thrust faces of the piston.I thought the JCC pistons were a bit light on circlip tension,so make sure you fit them sharp side out, and check the ring gap on the compression rings, 0.012'' is good don't worry if you have a bit more,good luck and dont believe most of the bullshit you read about dry assembly and not honing on the internet. :idea:

Or maybe just a tradition.
However keeping the ends of the oil control rings 1" away from alighnment of wrist pin is "to prevent the rail ends spragging in the connecting rod clearance cuttaways in the cylinders". Which sounds like a good reason.
