Been a bit distracted most of this season, having a 2 1/2 month wait for parts for the Commando (clutch hub, primary chain) from different sources (pandemic mail backlogs), and getting a classic MINI during this down time to hold my attention.

Got the 850 going again this week. Started up OK and felt pretty sweet. Noticed a metallic rattling starting around 2800 rpm. Was not there on previous runs beginning of season. Close inspection showed two lower, rear engine cradle plate bolts had come loose and their nuts were AWOL. Only one bolt left holding engine to cradle plates!! Grabbed a 3/8" & 5/16 fine (24 TPI) pair of nuts & lock washers from local hardware store and fit them up using locktite, 30 & 20 ft-lbs each respectively. Checked remaining engine cradle bolts front & rear, giving them each a snug up.

Test ride showed complete remission of the new rattle disease.

Hopefully you caught it before the holes became too wallowed out
This can happen on commando's it can effect the handling

I bet he caught it in time based on the original post. If it had been left for any length of time it could certainly have been a problem, but it sounds like it was immediately sorted.

Good hearing is limited on this forum I suspect , why a good once over couple times a season is good practice .... have caught a few “issues” over the years before they became an event

Copy that.
Seems I hardly solve one issue when more pop up.
Case in point, now that misfiring and loose cradles solved, I see a bit of seepage from one fork damper rod fixing bolt.

But that won't stop me getting a few happy miles on the bike next few weeks.

All Commando owners should tighten up the 3 sub-cradle bolts periodically. Not in the manual.

Hi Tornado,
What is a "classic MINI"? The British car?

Ed

They do tend to shake things loose. I recently found the starter coming loose on a preflight inspection.
If my "starter" began coming loose, id have immediate notice while walking a bout on it :-)
