Comstock sump plug breather

After many requests to do a reed breather that doesn't require case machining I finally got a workable design. I only have a few of them right now but there will be more available soon. Jim

Looks good, gotta love CNC machinery! I like the way those two small screws on the reed block cant find their way in to the engine with this set up. Ill have to finish my timing case one at some stage.

jim,

What is the price point for one of these?

If possible, can I be in the que for one?

Thanks!

Sky

Cool idea, how far beyond does it stick out compared to the stock plug?

So, this item will do the job of both the PCV and present sump plug ?.

What happens if the engine wet sumps ?.

Interesting! Jim does this breather require to plug up the timingside holes like your CNW breather does, or is this one a 'plug and play' unit?

I am fitting an anti wet sumping valve, so it really doesn't matter, I am just curious.

Is that hose fitting 3/8 ?.

Looks like a NASA item to me! - plus extra credit on spoofing us by showing it mounted as if it was really a low point liquid settled oil sump drain to bypass filter.

Prices are not set yet, I can set you up with one of the short run if your interested. I will PM you later in the week. Jim

It sticks down approximately 1 inch farther than the original. Still not the lowest part. Jim

Well, I'm not, so I'd still like to know. I suppose the hex is 1 1/2"?

Good question Josh!

The breather pickup is the same height and very close to the pickup on my older breather. If the engine is started with a sump full of oil then the oil passes through the reeds and back up to the oil tank. It will help clear the cases faster than the scavenge pump alone.

I would avoid revving the engine hard for the first 30 seconds so that the crankcase pressure does not build faster than the oil can exit the cases. I suppose you could push the crank seal out of place if that were to happen but I have not seen it happen yet.

Of course I would hate to rev the engine if it were wet sumped with or without the reed breather. Jim

I'm guessing the cost is more than the bolt on one?...bc more parts/machine work involved

This can be a plug and play unit although you will see higher crankcase vacuum if the holes into the timing chest are plugged. It was about 5 inches of vacuum in comparison to 8 inches average.

They can be plugged with tapered aluminum plugs and a bit of JB weld but you would want to drill the 1/4 inch hole down low for oil drainage. That hole can be drilled without splitting the cases if you are careful. I have done a few by using a blower attached to the sump drain hole to pressurize the crankcase so when the bit breaks through the chips come back out toward you. Jim

How would it work with the early timed breather off the left side and the original drillings in the timing side, which I understand are different than the later ones when they did away with that timed breather? I suppose it would be best to block the timed breather port. Or would some new drillings be necessary in the timing side to the crank?
