Good evening,

thought I'd introduce myself as well after registering a couple of weeks ago and reading with increasing interest the various restauration reports, technical tips, even Ludwig's pix on the alps..great forum indeed! My name is Daniel, Spanish living in Munich/Germany (so actually in the very neighborhood of the Alps) and owner - or better rider - of a '74 Commando 850 MKIIa (cafe'd) since 1998..amongst other twins, mostly BMW's. I got the link through the German CBBC-forum (Classic British Bile Club..thanks Tim for the hint!).

I've been a long-time lurker on Brit-Iron (maybe 10 posts in the last 10 or 12 years) and it's funny to find a few "known" characters such as Hobot (hi Steve :D 9)..some of the guys here I actually met in person, around 2002 or 2003, at the NOC rally in Christiansand/Norway (Gino R., maybe you recall the "German" guy with the green Commando whom you "sold" a couple of Champion spark plugs..I remember you had a whole case of them with you  ).

Anyway, I am in the process of spiffing up the Commando for a 2,000 mile trip to Italy coming up in June, after having just ridden it the last 10 years..I actually spent most of the first 2 years of my Commando ownership pushing it home rather than driving it but after a serious overhaul in my second-floor apartment it has behaved well ever since. To be honest the Commando was the first and only bike I seriously considered selling at some point..or investing in a gallon of gas and a lighter. Glad I didn't..but it will have to prove itself on that trip as the competition is all modern bikes and I'm supposed to lead the group 8)

So no fancy restauration reports to be expected from my side (I hope!), I don't even have a current picture of it handy right now but I will see to have a few posted soon.

Other than that I own 4 BMW's - '76 R60/6 cafe'd, a '82 R100RT, a pre-war (1938) R51 and the race bike, a '78 1070cc R100w, plus a '74 Moto Guzzi 750s. All the Beemers (with exception to the R51) are a bit special as they are all watercooled..again, I need to take some new pix in case you guys are interested.

That's it for now..

G'day from South Australia... BMW's and Nortons are pretty different!!

Considering how many Norton owners have BMWs you have to assume they have some similarities.

I hope you don't plan to do that trip with the original 5/8" master cylinder ..... 8)

Welcome Daniel
Have done your part of the world many times on my Beemer (K1100RS). Just for old times sake, would like to take The Norton 750 around Europe again as happened 35 years ago!! Thing is, what may take two weeks on the BMW may require 4 weeks on the Norton!!??? At least with a norton though, if it does break down (Unlikely as it may be  !) Its usually fixable rather than requiring the need to be hooked up to a diagnostic computer.
Enjoy your trip.

Howdy, Daniel, from south Texas.

I'd LOVE to see pix of custom water-cooled boxers. We do have an "other classic bikes" section!

Besides a couple of Nortons, I've got a little R60/5 and a '74 Guzzi 850 Eldorado in my garage, for common ground.

Thanks for the nice welcome..Beemer's are indeed a bit different from Norton's..fortunately, otherwise it would be boring, but in some areas they are similar..lots of quirks and not everyone feels comfortable on any!

I just went through the few pix I have, this one is the Commando back in 2006 (how embarrassing) somewhere in the Austrian Alps (Nockalm) together with two friends on Guzzi & BMW (I'm behind the camera):

New here too..

I'll try to take some more recent photos this week-end & share..

The Commando hasn't changed much - visually at least - since then. It has a Pazon ignition, belt conversion, no air filters, rearsets and a Triumph rear conical hub. Seat is unknown to me and I also believe that the tank is not standard, but not sure about that. I bought it in 1998 with 11K miles, now it has done around 27k miles..not a lot in the 13 years but I haven't been able to ride much the last few years, and the little I ride I share it with the other stuff in my garage.

I hope you don't plan to do that trip with the original 5/8" master cylinder .....

Tim - yes, for now that's the plan  .. I still need to talk to Jo S. to see what we can do about it, Roger from RGM can't do it this year (!) as he's fully busy..but grinding down the disk and replacing the EBC pads by Lucas has improved the braking already quite a bit! But as I am stubborn I will not change the Lockheed Master Cylinder.. no Sir!

Here are a couple of pix of the watercooled race flat-twin, I maybe post some more details on it in the other classic bike section:

New here too..

Hey Daniel, welcome! How could I forget Norway!!! I'm sure you won't
I've bumped into Joachim a couple of times since then and wondered where you dissapeared to, small place this Norton world.
Lots of good advice on here and the occasional P*ss take (I know you speak about 10,000 languages so will understand that)
Hopefully meet up sometime again soon.
