New eye lens

Wow, here I am the second day after the second op yesterday on the left eye and it's doing much better, I can actually see out of it. The first night was horrible like another stick in the eye, but the doc gave me enough sleep stuff I came home, sat on the chair and slept from 4 to 6, had dinner and went to bed at 9. As long as I had my eye closed it was fine , I took 2 Tylenol which probably did nothing. Went in for the check up this AM and watched Panda's and Nova stuff and the TV was clearer than ever even with the new eye that was really blurry. I think in a couple days my sight will be better than I've ever seen, so to speak.

On the way to the operation, on I81 there was a '30 minute' backup because of an accident. Well, that turned into over an hour. They took me in anyhow, seems like everyone else had the same issue with traffic.

HAHA... got my first eye done yesterday too. Pretty interesting how it works. And yes, I have a spot in there that feels like the time I had a steel sliver blow into my eye under my safety glasses. Yesterday was a bit rough, like you say, kept the eyes closed and it was tolerable. Today, that pain is nearly gone, and easy to deal with. It will take a couple of days for all the swelling and healing to let this settle down to where the new lens is working at optimum. However, seems like a huge improvement. Now I know what to expect with the other one. Wife was kind of mad at me because I didnt tell her, I just took an Uber over to the place and got it done. I am kind of independent like that. But it wouldn't matter with the Covid she could not come in anyway.

Seems like another reason I am glad I pushed to get this done as soon as I could. I think this kind of stuff is easier to deal with the younger you are and might as well enjoy it as long as a guy can. No disrespect intended, just my opinion.

My new lenses, at least this new, seem best in the evening, they seem to swell a bit overnight. The first one is about over that, but last night the second one was good, but this AM it's a bit swollen and blurry again. Like I say it seems to clear up as the day goes on. At least I hope it does.

Yeah, if you can get it done younger, might as well enjoy it longer. Sometimes I wonder if it's worth the grief but it was getting hard to look at stuff outside in the bright light. And I spend a fair amount of time outside if possible. I could go out and mow lots of leaves already, but I'm not going to until I get released on that. I've got 20 acres of grass to mow again too.

The doctor told me the same thing: your eyes heal up better and faster at a younger age. Plus the bonus of enjoying it for longer (hopefully). I had mine done at 49. When the other eye degrades, I will get it done as well. I am not waiting so long with it.

When my dad had his done (he is only 20 years older than me), he insisted that they did not correct his eye's to 20/20. He wanted no excuse not to wear glasses, as his prescription lenses have saved his eyes from countless pieces of shrapnel over the years. He has a fabricating and repair shop, while still doing a bit of farming (40 head of beef cattle and 500 laying hens). No retirement plans for him - LOL!

I see his logic, and am glad I need reading glasses.

I was trained to shoot pistol by the Commonwealth Police. My lovely wife and I visited the Gold Coast in Queensland where there is a shooting range which has pistols. She shot my backside off. I cannot see the sights and the target at the same time. Same when playing pool.

In 6 weeks you will forget any aggravation. The drug regimen after the surgery is a PITA but it only lasts 6 weeks to a couple of months. Others have made a good point about starting to wear safety glasses if up to now you've had a lifetime of relying on your regular glasses to protect you from flying debris.

I noticed something else yesterday, and now I am driving the wife crazy doing it. Since it comes on gradually, it is not noticable how cataracts diffuse light in the eye and scatter it around and effect color. Vision gets blurry, and lights get annoying, that is more obvious. Now that I have one eye cataract free and the other still has the problem, I was looking out the window and testing my vision, so I covered the new eye and looked out the window. Then I switched to the other eye. I am still in the healing phase so that "new" eye has decent vision (still developing), however, I was amazed at how different my perception of color is improved in the good eye. Especially noted when looking at light colored or white objects or walls. White is now white with the "new" eye. With the bad one, everything looks kind of "yellowed" is the best way I can put it. So I sit around and cover one eye, then switch. Loads of fun for the simple minded, I guess. I am at work today, I could have come back yesterday, but that would have been a bit uncomfortable, today is clear sailing. Amazing how quick the recovery is.

My late mother had this done and it was amazing, she'd worn glasses for about 70 odd years and was uncomfortable without having a pair on her face, so se got some with a very light prescription just as an excuse to wear a pair. I myself had radial keratotomy quite a while ago and that was amazing too.

My wife made fun of me when I looked at the toilet paper the other day and said, 'it looks so white'. It wasn't to obvious with on eye but with both, it's a bit stunning. But the healing is still going on, there's still a lot of blurryness that comes an goes.

I would switch eyes and with the new one early on, it was better, but then when I looked with the old one, it too was OK, but with both it was a game changer. There's something about your brain taking the best of both near as I can tell.

Yeah, when I was seeing an eye Dr before I went with the one that did my surgery. I told him I would almost rather have real good near vision for reading and working on small items with tiny little screws and he said I could have one eye good for far vision and one eye good for near vision and the brain would adjust. And I was thining I bet that would mess with depth perception, and I only want to do this exactly once, so I would not try that.

And today I realized that the bedroom curtains my wife bought a few years ago with the gold medallion pattern on a kind of yellowish gold background that i really liked are actually a gold medallion pattern on a bright white background.

Well, here it is almost a week from the left eye replacement and I'm not happy. As usual, I'm a malcontent. It's still not cleared up. And all the colors are now different, there's more blue to the whites. And everything is smeary. I'm getting a bit discouraged, but they tell me it may take 3-5 weeks to clear up. I can say that I can read stuff I've never been able to do before, things at least in the right eye are as sharp as I've seen, with a bit of smearyness. Boy I hope it clears up. And as I was telling the wife the other day after wiping my butt 'the toilet paper is so white', she thought that was funny so she told her friend,

Hang in there. I am pulling for you. I hope this all works out well. Every day is up and down. Yesterday I couldn't tell my bad eye from my good one. Today, I could see at better than 20/20 out of my repaired eye ... I had verified 20 /10 visions into my early 30's. This is very up and down until it settles in. I also notice time of day matters. But for me this is day 5. Have faith, and we will see....

Some interesting and tough interactions/conversations.....I thank you guys who are dealing with these issues for sharing.

I noticed the same thing: as my left eye is still in good shape, I have no firm plans to "fix" it in the immediate future. So my left eye lens does show more yellowing than my right - like the difference between warm white and cool white lighting hues. Now a year in after the surgery, I don't really notice it too much any more. Brain has adapted to that.

The big change for me was my brain getting use to having two sources of vision to choose from. After almost 50 years of blurry vision in my right eye, it took some time for my brain to start actually using the new data that it was being presented. This has taken months.

My vision in my right eye is actually better than my left now, which is quite a novel thing for me. :)

Today started out pretty good, but progressed to not so good. I think I just am easy to irritate. It really does bother me, the first eye, I was whacked out and depressed, now it's not bad, now the second eye seeming to take longer to heal, but it may be 5-6 weeks to settle, and then it may really be 6 months until every thing settles down. But it's still aggravating.

I remember my GP told me I needed a hernia operation. Well, he said it would be nothing. Day I came home, outpatient, I sat down on the sofa for a while and then of course I had to pee. So I asked the wife to come over and give me a hand getting up since I walked out of the hospital just fine. Well, as she pulled me up, the pain hit, I passed out and pissed all over the sofa. I think the docs don't want to tell you how it's really going to be or no one would do it.

The benefits of the NHS .. i have had detached retinas in both eyes, 7 ops on the left eye & 1 on the right.
Cataracts removed to both eyes & lenses fitted.... hasn't cost me a cent

Well, got the second eye done yesterday. Less painful, and I remember a whole lot more of the procedure. It was just in and out. Right eye was tested after one week (last week) at 20/15 - I am extremely happy about that. Second eye has a little double vision, but I can read the computer screen without any glass - I sure hope it heals up like the other one. But better than the other one after day one. My experince was every other day was better, the between days were not so great. DR said still aways away for this to get where it will settle. I had 20/10 vision my early days and into my 30's, so I am really grateful this seems to be going so well. Dr told me I am healing "like a teenager" which to me is a bit surprising, I have been type 2 diabetic for about 20 years, but I work hard on blood sugar control, and exercise some. So, everyone is different, it is not YMMV, it is more like your mileage WILL vary. So, I think the longer you wait the harder it will be, but that is my opinion only, see your Dr and get some real advice.

Anyone want to PM me and ask questions about how this surgery goes, let me know.

It's getting better, but it's taking me a while, after all I'll be 77 next week. But I can see without glasses, especially close up.

Glad to hear, I been thinking about you and am really happy to see you are having progress. Again, best wishes.

Actually tonight things are improving a lot. I can sit at the computer and read text from about 40" away, which is a bonus. It's been hard to do that unless I get real close before. And the eyes don't feel so tired, maybe they're finally clearing up. I was sitting outside watching the border terriers today and I saw a squirrel fall off a tree about 400 feet away down by our stream and run away with another one. Then since it's coming winter here, I saw some poplar seeds fall off the tree about 200' away, never seen that before. I can actually see the bark on trees from a long way away now. It seems that long distance is easier on the eyes than the computer, but maybe it will straighten out. I can read the cell phone fine, but reading the New Yorker is a bit hard after a while, but now I have no glasses to correct anything. I can only imagine things will improve, if you get my drift.
