New electric start conversion

I know your kit will be very good quality but adding up the cost of things it will be to expensive for a lot of folks and that's not adding the price for the belt drive kit, I am glad I have no troubles kicking my Norton over, have been doing so for 40 years and have the nack and always starts on first kick.

You are right. QPD developed an electric start conversion. It was also the system that Kenny Dreer used for his Vintage rebuilds and ultimately the VR's. This is the same system that consistently failed on the majority of the machines and was rendered inoperable.

While the price on a product can always be argued, I really feel that the kit is a very good value. It is absolutely complete with everything needed to install on your machine. The complete belt drive is also included in the price and considering that, there isnt anything else on the market close to it

Sure you will need a good battery and clutch but that is something that most people have already.

When I look at the number of quality parts involved and the relatively small volume of production, the price seems very fair.

If people feel their toes are being stepped on then maybe they need to be understanding, rather than feel the neediness to be understood. Right or wrong, Mr. Leadbeater has a right to be here and to say what ever he likes, within reason. :mrgreen:
Yes, there is a growing interest due to the increasing median age of the membership and related injuries, but there is a difference between a basic interest and product promotion. There is a place both and a line to be drawn. It's one thing to highjack a thread, and another to highjack a forum.

I can still kick mine, despite its 10.5:1 CR.

And I have a fetish for weight saving.

Even so, the quality of this kit from Matt almost tempts me!

For what you get in the kit, the quality of it, the development effort that's gone into it, and the brand value that says if it comes from cNw it WILL perform, all adds to make this pretty damn good value IMHO.

Interesting comments Pete,

In my opinion, Mr Leadbeater wrote some pretty irrelevant stuff about an outdated product, that didn't work well, and that's no longer available. The purpose of his comment seemed to be to insinuate something negative towards / about the cNw offering.

I would argue that Matt responded eloquently, politely and factually.

Not sure what your last sentence refers to... you seem to be accusing Matt of hijacking this forum!? I assume I've got the wrong end of the stick here...?

Well, no. Forum members don't have any automatic "right to be here". We are all Jerry's guests, even VIPs, as it's his forum.

I thought it was bordering on rude. Just the way it was written. I am totally bias towards cNw - let that be known. Performance, Quality and most importantly Safety. I ride my commando's hard in modern day traffic like a modern bike and don't mind paying extra to have that. The fact that the workmanship is outstanding is good too. Thanks again Matt for all you do.

Lets move on and try to stay focused on what Matt and his team are putting together and keep this thread stable. Feel free to open a new topic about other starter systems too, but no need to infect this informational topic.

I really like this system but am just hung up on the air filter thing. If a modified ham can could be put in place that looks roughly original with a filter in place, keep the key in that same stupid spot, it would be very tempting.

So much of my bike is still 100% original, including the stock fluted mufflers etc. I understand I could always put it back stock.

Oh well, my mind might change when I can no longer kick start this thing.

All good Matt, you do great work and the time to and investment into makeing good Quilty parts to keep our old bikes going great and you won't have any troubles selling this upgrade kit, but money has always been my problem for most of my working life and even harder now that I am no longer working, need to keep my fingers crossed and hope my numbers come up Saterday night lotto.

Well this is like waiting for the sun to come up...you know its going to be light soon....the sun warming your skin....the birds singing..... you've seen enough sun rise and sun sets to be pretty sure what you'll see...feel....smell and hear....That is how I would compare waiting for the CNW E/start kit feels to me.I know exactly what it feels like to wait for...ANYTHING....from Matt....and so do all the folks who "get" the CNW program.....everything i've waited for over the last 12 years from Matt and CNW has ALWAYS met and exceeded my expectations....and ALWAYS been worth waiting for !! I am posting today with much anticipation and excitement....for the latest offering from Matt and his band of "merry ( Norton ) pranksters" only this is no prank !!....My bike CNW # 012....is with Matt and nearing completion of the E/start kit.I like many of our other "senior" or "vintage/classic" members want to ride my Norton for many years to come...Matt has made that possible for me....and anyone else lucky and fortunate enough to see the common sense value that is packed into this well thought out and impeccably executed modification,built to live in the real world.....and look every bit the part !! Not only will this kit perform as advertised.....like 100% of everything and anything... ever to come from CNW.... It looks to me like they have taken the fit and finish ( the CNW signature ) to a even higher standard !! I sent my bike out to Matt months ago to have the E start and some other service/modifications performed by the "maestro " himself....well its just about ready to come home....and I am having trouble containing my enthusiasm...trouble sleeping...dry mouth...runny nose...watering eyes...uncontrollable fits of joy and happiness L.O.L .....I wanted to post today to share this feeling with the other forum members,this forum and most all the members have been a great resourse I have been able to learn,laugh and sometimes even change my mind or perspective based on things I have seen on our forum....Thanks to everyone for all the great info......One last thing from me....for some reason my bike # 012 never made it onto the CNW gallery page.....look...build # 12 is missing....not for long,My bike should be up on Matts gallery before it leaves Colorado to come home......come home to me girl !! Matt...John at STS and everyone else who graced this E start project from its inception, to the reality of production.....thank you.....thank you....for thinking outside the box...for your vision....determination....diligence....and the BIG BALLS it took to take such a major financial risk......I do mean BIG BALLS TOO !! The commitment to our machines you've all made is much appreciated and I can....with much confidence say that I speak for many people who feel the same....where would we be without people like Matt that are not afraid to take this kind of a risk.....maybe you need to be in business for yourself to really "get" the signifigance of risk taking at this level.....what ever....rock on....and Give me my Norton !! Couldn't help but chuckle over zefer's remarks and muse over others. I am the 'custodian' of cNw 76 and can say that we are the lucky recipients of Matt's, Comnoz, Kenny Cummings, Jim Schmidt, Maney and a host of other Norton enthusiasts that have the energy, determination and ability to make these bikes more than they ever were brand new. Like zefer, I am heading down to Colorado at the end of May to have my bike refreshed (including the e-start system, hydraulic clutch, triple trees, head steady, Fullauto head, etc.) by the cNw team of experts and although I could probably do the work myself, I am looking forward to the pilgrimage; Dolores, Co is a very long way from British Columbia, Canada. No question that every Norton owner has limited funds, unless you're Billy Joel or Jay Leno; however, the expenditures we make on our bikes are over and above our day to day costs of living and there are some of us that choose to go the extra mile, both literally and figuratively. A lot of Norton owners that I meet take great pride in being frugal and/or keeping their bikes stock, while others, myself included, appreciate the R&D and manufacture of parts that make these bikes better and are more than willing to spend our disposable income on our bikes and, in so doing, keep these guys solvent. If Matt wasn't in business, and doing something else, I might still own a Norton but it wouldn't be my daily driver unless I had a friend that was willing to follow my in his truck with a ramp and tie downs! Finally, what most don't get is the end service that cNw provides which is the best that I have ever experienced. Somewhere in these threads, Matt made a comment about getting no sleep. No kidding. Between building new bikes, refreshing existing bikes with new bits, researching and developing new parts, running a business, answering forum member questions and one on one emails from existing and potential customers, it is pretty amazing that he does all of this with a smile and a great attitude.
Great forum by the way; I have learned and am learning lots so many thanks to all of you for contributing.

It's been a real treat working with someone who understands what my pop used to tell me about clients:

Because the cnw estart includes a belt drive, I'd say it's one hell of a value. An alton is just as much without the belt, and doesn't have nearly the fine workmanship of the cnw estart.
I have a 75 I am putting together that I was originally planning to keep and sell the 73 that I have had for 20 years. Instead I will probably sell the 75 and use some of the proceeds to put the cnw kit on my 73.

Dude!!! You're comparing apples to oranges. The Alton comes with a new alternator ( which is great if you need one).
