I have just spent $1,000 on having parts chromed and alloy parts polished for my restoration.

Best advice on protecting the chrome parts until I need to use them on my restoration ('74 Roadster).

Same deal for the polished alloy, eg primary cases, timing cover, Z plates, etc. I realise that the polished alloy might need a different coating to preserve it from the chromed pieces.

It could be some time till I need to use the parts, months not weeks and we are heading into winter here is Australia and these parts will be stored in my unheated workshop.

Thanks in anticipation.

Cheers Don

Original Spray Polish (glorified Pledge) cleans and shines and doesn't build up with repeated re-applications.

Nothing beats Cosmolene! But if you do not care for the mess, use yellow wax.

Do not let your alloy parts come in contact with other metals .... wrap in newspaper, and store separately.

Thanks Guys, some good replies there.

Some of those brand names I am not familiar with. Probably not available in Oz.

Danno is Original Spray Polish the brand name of the product. We do have Pledge here. Can that be used.

Thanks Don

P.S. Slick - Good advice on wrapping alloy bits in newspaper. It cost a lot to get the primary cases and the Z plates polished. Would not want them to deteriorate.

thanks

When I picked up my polished alloy and chrome work for a longer term project some years ago it was wrapped in bubble wrap and newspaper. I put it all in the plastic tubs with lids that you can buy at Bunnings and it's lived in my shed for the last few years and is as good as the day I bought it home. That's through a few Canberra winters with condensation etc. The tubs keep the moisture out nicely. I don't think it would hurt to add a layer of wax or oil of some sort either. The only disaster I had was one rim that wasn't in a tub and a rat/mouse/possum pissed on the wrapped parcel and some of the piss got through to the chrome and rusted it. Rat baits have now been added to my shed (take that you little bastards)!

BSABOSS, thanks for the reply. I never thought of those plastic tubs with sealed lids. What a great idea. It's not that my shed is damp, it just gets cold in there in the winter as it has flow thru ventilation to keep things cool in summer.

Original is available in motorcycle shops. It was formerly a Hondaline product, but for some reason, Honda backed away and the manufacturer began making it with their own label to keep up with demand. Pledge is ok, perhaps a little oilier than Original, but much cheaper. Both are aerosol spray wax products. I like it because it's also useful on windscreens and faceshields. If you use Pledge on he inside of a faceshield, be prepared for the odor.

The 1st link is not an Australian site. Australian web pages are - - - - .com.au

Well, it was Block Chemical Australia.

The Wemoto Australian site does not have any of the ACF-50 products available.

There seems to be other ACF-50 stockists in Australia.

But as is usually the case these good products are not available in Australia.
Cheers don

Don - I'm in Central Queensland.
I have also used ACF-50 (bought a 4 litre bottle) and can thoroughly recommend it.

To keep the shine on alloy I use something different - a bloke in Bundaberg makes and sells it - Wilko's Pro Shine - Xtreme Detail Polish.
It is recommended to put it on a warm surface then hand buff it off. works on paintwork too.
I have been using it for about 7 years and swear by it.
Instructions and contact on photo below.
Cheers

Thanks Rob, I have already purchased something online, but will keep him in mind for the future.

Thanks Don

Les, I have purchased a product from the Corrosion Dr. It is called XCP Rust Blocker -

Its description is as follows:
  • Maximum Rust Protection for all applications where rust damages.
  • Clear Flexible film protects from corrosion.
Should be happy with that when it arrives. I will remove the WD40 with Oil and Grease Remover and then apply the spray on product. I can report back for the convenience of the Australian members.

Thanks again,
Don
