Hi All;
I am re-fitting a 70 Commando Fastback. My ancient legs require the bike to start within a kick or two. I have decided in favor of the 34mm Mik kit, Electronic ignition (sure fire). I need help with selecting coils, spark plug wires and caps. I would also like to run Iridium plugs as long as the wisdom of this group doesn't have any reason not to.
I have a new battery, but have not done anything else to the the electrical/charging system.
I have no desire to put an electric starter on the bike. I'm not concerned with top end performance or curve carving. This bike will be for local leisure riding. I have other steeds for dirt (KTM 250 XCFW), curves (Aprilia Tuono Factory, and long distance (BMW R1100RT).
Reliability is also a priority.
I look forward to your collective wisdom, and thank you in advance. Cheers, Frank

The Dynacoil DC7-1 5ohm is an awesome match for the sure-fire. A dual output unit that is as indestructible a coil as I have seen.

Loose the zener and stock regulator for a Podtronics unit. Clean and simple.

These few items will add reliability by eliminating the old crap and a lot of unnecessary wiring.

You listed the right stuff and so did Pete for a Commando that if don't start first "step on" not even a real kick, each and every time in about any temps then you forgot to turn something on so check that before wearing ya self out with a 2nd step down to joy. If ya really want some extra ease and parking lot wheelie leaps, fit a lower first gear for better kicker lever leverage inside. Ask Sure Fire what ohm valve their system wants to see before springing for one. Plug type only matters if too it adds much resistance factor in addition to what's built into boots, leads and plugs. Time by the manual to start then adv tiny amounts till hints of cough back fire then retard till in just don't for nice response w/o hurting to start. Then put a time light on it and make note where it lands. I like the cable enricher attachment on MIki carbs for the neat gizmo on bars and no hunting under bike to operate like rapper grabbing his crotch in public. I like to gear up the tranny sprocket as can stay in low gears lower for longer stronger pull then curise freeway speed below 5000 all day long, at least on a rubber mounted Commando. Some I know that live on solid mount verticals put on rubber mounted bar kit. hobot

Agreed, Dyna coil is the way to go. Great big fat blue spark! I use the Dyna coil with a Boyer analog ignition and a Mikuni carb and my bike starts second kick every time! First kick with the ignition off but Mikuni enrichener circuit on. Second kick with juice and away she goes.

I haven't seen any need for iridium plugs. NGK BP7ES work great for me. Others may have a different opinion.

I have iridian plugs they work great. my boyer an coils are 30 years old an with pair of new amals it starts first kick 8 times out of 10. Shop around on ebay you can get them for half the price of retailer an as they fit all kinds of other stuff just look for the right code number an it will do the job. I got 2 NGKs for the £11 delivered to my door from some retailers they would be 3 or 4 times that cost.
