there should be a hole in the cross tube just under the front of the engine near the timing side frame rail, less than 1/8" diameter. The bash plate would have a cutout in this area to allow the spring to attach to the frame.

Some follow up since I can't figure this out.
I don't follow about there being a frame cross bar at front of engine. The only cross member is the engine mounting bolt and it's distance piece. Is the hole for the spring suppose to be in the distance piece?
Also, while the skid plate has a cutout for the side stand, it seems to be for the side stand mounting lug and the side stand pivot rather than the spring.
I did find to small holes on the right side frame rail as you can see in the photos. This however will not allow clearance for the spring through the cutout on the skid plate?
