My MKIII rebuild

Hello Coco, I'm at the stage of fitting the battery tray in my Mk3 rebuild. Trouble is it doesn't want to fit without extreme force. (I don't recall it was hard to remove) I have been looking at your pictures and can't make out how it is positioned in relation to the frame gussets and the Z plates. Any chance of a couple of pictures of this detail ? Yes I know, I should have taken pictures before I dismantled it. My email is, g_t_moloney@bigpond.com Thanks, Regards Graeme.

I know the feeling all too well, Over time things all these things will work out. Just think if we do this again we won't make these detours and it won't be as fun. Keep up the great work, The bike looks fantastic.

Its starting to look like something. Yardwork and watching the Tour de France has eaten up a lot of my time lately.

Coco,

Great looking bike.

Who poured the shop floor? "Don't need no stinkin' rebar".

Looking mighty good, Coco. And damn, those wheels/rotors look outstanding. Not that a Norton is a run-of-the-mill bike these days anyway, but yours certainly will be different with the finned after-market goodies.

Are you going negative or positive ground? I was indifferent about it and was heading toward positive ground but at the last minute when the gages came in, they are negative ground only.

Cookie classified yours "very pretty" whereas mine only got "cute". Maybe if we spend more time and money on them, we can get them up to "simply adorable" status. Guess that's better than kewl n awsum.

Z, I'm going negative ground. I'm going to start making my own wiring harness next week. I think I'd rather have dental surgery than do wiring but it has to be done and I've been putting it off long enough. I'm going to jump into the fire feet first.

Once I get some bar end tassles and some hokey spokeys on the wheels it will be up to adorable status. I'm waiting for my Hello Kitty seat cover and I'm good to go.

What wheel combination are you running? I Like......

Stock hubs with Excel shouldered rims. 19" in front and an 18" in the back. Nothing special except that they're all shiny.

Coco,

What are you going to use for a dip switch? Are you going to wire for blinkers just in case? My old Triumphs don't have blinkers (never did) and I always feel like traffic behind is out to get me when making a turn. Most younger generation drivers don't have a clue about hand signals.

McMaster Carr sells expandable mesh that works good for a harness. It is tough, tough. I use a blade clamped in visegrips and heat it with a propane torch to cut as my pocket knife won't touch it. After I position the wire bundle in the mesh, I slide a length of heat shrink tubing over the ends of the mesh to shrink down to tidy up the ends. The 3/8" mesh can handle up to 5/8" wire bundle down to 3/16 and you can drop wires out of the harness on the way to the headlight bucket, if needed.

I recently signaled a left turn to a young woman who cheerfully waved back.

lol...that's exactly why I'm putting signals on my bike even though they don't look as good

Unsure about the switch. I may just leave it on the bright setting and simply move my headlight up by hand when on the highway.

I may wire in a 3 way (?) toggle. Mount it on the coil bracket so I have on-off-brights. Don't know yet. I'm an electro-retard so I change my mind every five minutes about what to do. Honestly, if there was anyone around me capable of doing wiring to Brit bikes, I'd gladly pay someone to do this for me but I feel I must learn this electrical business and get it over with.

No signlas and I did think of laying wire in just in case. I'm keeping my horn since most drivers can't hear you give them the finger when they cut you off. Around here blinkers don't do jack anyway. Too many cluless idiots texting their BFF's are not even looking and cagers here don't signal anyway. It's total mayhem.

I've seen that mesh before. Audio guys call it tech-flex. That stuff has made many snake-oil salesman rich in the home audio world. Simply wrapping speaker or interconnect wire in that stuff and calling "boutique audio cabling" has been going on for a while. I was just going to use heat shrink with the adhesive for wrapping the loom. Or hockey tape. 8)

Where I live you could send out flares, Warning shots over their hood and they still don't know what to do. People in So.Ca. Don't know how to drive PERIOD! So for me the fact the 72 has no turn signals only would help in the case that the person was even paying attention while driving, And there a so many text messages to respond to they don't have time to do that. Riding around here is like a youtube video of downtown Saigon traffic, Stupid! Sorry guys I was cut off again this morning on my way to work, Just had to vent.

You know I don't even own a cell phone! For real. I don't even answer my phone at home so I certainly don't need a cell. Mind you, I'll probably buy one when start doing some highway miles on the Commando because you really never know what might happen.

Don't get me started on drivers. Driving to and from work is like doing battle. You need a strategy and plan of action. Good thing I'm always scouting ahead and am aware of what is around me. I've always driven a car with that mentality long before I even got a motorcycle.

I've lived on four different continents. As well as many states here in the U.S. Trust me, SoCal has the best drivers in the world. Nowhere else could that amount of traffic move that quickly. It only goes downhill from there.

Imagine driving in Mexico City or Bombay. I don't think I could come close to imagining what complete chaos that would be. I'd die for sure.

I'm going to try to get my inner/outter primary and all the guts installed this weekend so I can get down to wiring. I'm watching the Tour de France on the early a.m. airing so at least I have both Sat and Sun afternoons to get some work done. Wish me luck.

JimC Quickly? When was the last time you were on the 91 or the 405, 110, 710, 605? If you leave your house at 3:30 a.m. it may be quick but I think in the last 10 years they have added about 116 Trillion people to Wrong Beach alone. Coco I hope you have all your seals and don't forget one like I did and have it turn into a week long job, I had forgot to order the cross shaft seal for the shifter. CRAP! There were a few times I was making great progress when suddenly I realized I forgot a special seal or gasket. Everything comes to a screeching halt. If I had all the little what nots and didn't have to make a run to hardware or auto parts store I would have finished a lot sooner. Your bike is very nice and it looks like you are being very careful so don't start to hurry now. Keep up the great work, James would love your bike.

I actually have a lot of seals.....a few exteas even. When CNW did my motor, they replaced all seals in the inner primary. I bought all new ones as well not knowing they did that so I'm good to go. I had the week long wait for a spacer a while back so I know about all that waiting.

Yeah, I'm taking my time with this. There is a local guy who is on this forum is going to help me out today. First time I've asked for help so far so I got alot farther than I thought I would without help. This is my very first foray into a bike rebuild or any kind of bike repair actually. This MKIII is the very first motorcycle I've owned and ridden. Mind you, after I bought it almost 3 years ago, I drove it for a week, it snowed, then I ripped it apart. Had a borrowed Yamaha for a while but I have not ben on a bike this season and the wait is killing me. I need to get this thing running by August but I am trying hard to take my time and be very thorough.
