MotoGuzzi Sidecar Streamliner

Here's something a little different, that might interest the Guzzi fans.



My friend Eric and I built a Norton powered streamliner for Bonneville landspeed racing a few years back, but never managed to get a good run with it. I finally gave up on it (too much money, team, and logistics involved) and started building a different bike around the same Norton drive train. Eric decided to resurrect it this year with a Moto Guzzi engine from his street bike, so I went along with him to the BUB meet this year. It only ran 116 and 117 mph with the stock 1000SP engine, but it was very stable and easy to drive, so Eric is now building a serious race engine for it for next year. I'm the one in the orange shirt in this pic.

Seen cruise missiles that looked a bit like that, interesting aero shape...!

Yes. It is considered a sidecar streamliner. Class is 1000 SCS-PG, meaning 1000 cc sidecar streamliner pushrod gas. One of the problems we had with it when it was Norton powered and a straight streamliner was getting it started in a straight line. It's actually pretty difficult. Eric had a lot of trouble with that, so when he decided to run it with the Guzzi engine he also decided to add the sidecar. Makes it much easier to start in a straight line. He was right, and he had no problems getting off the start line. I'd been opposed to doing the sidecar thing when it had the Norton engine, because it just didn't look right to me for a streamliner to have a third wheel. Shows what I know.
