Montreal police re-tagged a friend's 72 Commando with 3 very cool frame identification tags rivetted to frame quite a few years back in history after a bar theft ,recovery and return to owner by Montreal Police Services. Owner told not to remove these tags so am working on bike now , stay tuned ,a slow thread. Bike in Burlington garage. Love Montreal.

In 1982 I got a homebuilt title for my Commando from boxes. The Colorado DMV riveted a plate just below the steering head on the downtube using 4 -3/16th inch drive rivets. Big and ugly. About 2 or 3 years later a crack appeared starting at one of the top rivet holes. I removed the tag and welded all 4 holes up. It had only traveled about 1/4 inch when I noticed the rusty line. I still look close at the area from time to time but nothing more has developed. Jim

Leanard (owner) and Fraser just stripped the troublesome front end to find a bent axle and a bent headstock tube a tad sideways and bad head bearings. Looks like the Montreal thief way back when hit the front wheel sideways (maybe a curb) on his joyride. No I.D. plate to see, just Montreal Police reported theft and damage sticker in it's place. To be continued.

Fraser tells me today the cause of the bent headstock tube is not from the thief but from the owner who strapped the front end down tight to the truck he was transporting it with. The back tail section or body was not attached to anything, just gravity here,he hit a curb and the wrenching forces took the whole body sideways twisting the front end a bit. They are now looking for a tube and bar to bend headstock back. Alcohol may have been involved he's from Montreal ya' know. This is one slow repair. Sold him a TT100 rear cheap for motivaton factor so let's follow it.

A buddy had a rough '72 Commando stolen off of his porch, many years later the Police called and said "come get your bike, we have it", the guy who bought it did a nice "low rent restoration" before trying to transfer the title and the bike was much better than when it disappeared.
