I have an 850, 2/74 on the plate. Looking at
the Tech Section it says:
Roadster 1A 9/73-2/75
Roadster 2/2A 1/74-2/75
How do I know which I have?
Wondering what woud be the proper
stock exhaust. It has the perforated
surround air filter and the balanced
pair of down pipes.
So is it black caps or peashooters?

I would say peashooters, from memory the blackcaps go with big black filter housing, however Norton did mix and match during model changes.

In other words, your guess is as good as mine :)

I think "2/75" is a typo, (not mine) as that probably should read: 2/74.

Mk1A and 2A models had the black plastic airbox and annular discharge "Black Cap" silencers/mufflers and carbs with stepped spray tubes.

A serial number higher than 307311 should be either a Mk2 (perforated metal airbox and peashooters) or a 2A. All 850 models supposedly had the balanced exhaust system. US 850 models were usually Mk1 or Mk2, as the quieter 1A & 2A models were originally intended for the European market where new noise regulations had been introduced at that time.

Thank you. Im a 312xxx serial so Mk2 without the "a".
Without the black box silencer looks to me that standard will be
a set of peashooters with crossovers. The bike came with same as
well as a set of blackcaps.

For your amusement, crossover, peas, black clock buckets two
stripe pins on the tank, silver cylinders.
...not to mention a fresh set of leathers!

Likely the barrels were originally black for 312xxx engine number. Silver was used in '73 for both 750 and 850 for whatever it's worth. Very easy to paint either way.
