I set the timing on my MKII using the crankshaft "cheek" slot and the factory tool to peg the slot. Is it safe to assume that this is spot on accurate to determine the 28 degrees? Thanks.

The slot is machined at the same time as the other details of the crankshaft, making it as accurate as any of its other features.

So, I'd have to believe that the slot relative to the machined port in the crankcase is a more accurate indicator of crankshaft position than a little scale screwed to the inside of chaincase cover ... just consider the tolerances that affect the location of that scale ... let alone whether someone has 'adjusted' the scale since its departure from the factory.
