MKIII side stand bolt/nut. Anyone know what size it is?

I can't seem to tighten nor loosen my side stand bolt. I was going to put a new bushing in it but I can't get that bolt and nut off.

If it is a size I can pick up from a local bolt supply place I'll just cut the old one off.

Is the bolt a special size?

I assume there will be no thread where the bushing sits on the bolt.

Anyone know what size and thread pitch that thing is?

Try giving it a good soak overnight with penetrating oil. It should come loose.

If I've picked the correct one out of my scrap box, it is UNF threaded - 7/16" x 20 tpi. The length is 2 1/4" and it has a plain shank of 1 1/2" but this is not critical within the bush although it should be a bolt and not a screw.

The head is 5/8" across flats but is lower than a normal bolt for reasons of ground clearance. A stainless replacement from a Norton specialist is probably the nicest option.
 
I suppose that checking with the supplier is the best thing to do. I actually have chromed originals so they're probably embrittled !

Do you remember the correspondence all those years ago in Motorcycle Sport between Dave Middleton and Andy Molnar over suitable stainless grades for spindles ? It put me right off and to this day I use standard items !

I've never been a Motorcycle Sport reader, but I do remember visiting another St/steel parts supplier many years ago, and he put me right off the idea of stainless wheel spindles, but I must admit I do use a lot of stainless fasteners myself.
 
when I rebuilt my bike years ago I was told that the bolt is a special & use genuine norton one only. If this is difficult to get, use high tensile, dont touch stainless with a barge pole!. Norvil in UK would supply this no trouble

I thought about SS.

I can get GR8 bolts here no problem, but trying to find a UNF SS bolt in my city is like trying to walk on water.

Some posts in this thread say SS is not good. Too bad since I just bought all new SS spindles for my wheels. I have quite a bit of stainless fasteners on my bike too like shock bolts. :wink:

Always after I make a parts order I notice some $5 part that I need. I noticed the bolt was loose so I tried to tighten it and no dice. It's not rusted since it's covered with engine oil and goo so there is a protective coating and I'm sure it's not seized due to corrosion.

The bolt does look slightly bent, hence my want to replace it.
