I'm wondering how much of a problem it would be to incorporate the MKIII spring assembly in the Mike Taglieri headsteady? Could someone tell me what the 2 holes attach to on the headsteady retainer? Item 8 here http://www.oldbritts.com/1975_g15.html

Also I'm assuming the 2 holes in the headsteady spring bracket (2) attach with the 2 bolts through the front of the headsteady?

I haven't seen the MKIII headsteady, so it's real unclear to me.

I guess I don't have that part on my 750?

dave you need to scrap that old head steady anyway as they are a known issue. you will need #'s 1,2,6,7,8,9 and 2 each of 3,4 and 5 but you need # 1 PERIOD!!!

Here's the front view from the bottom. I picked up the whole kit (what Bill listed) used on ebay for about $35.0 - $40.00 shipped to Canada. Someone did a topic on this a while back saying it was the best $40ish dollar improvement you could do to your bike.

I'm not arguing that my old HS isn't junk. My issue is mainly if I build the home made rod type HS, if I can use the spring and associated parts. It appears that I am missing something for the item 8, even if I buy the new style MKIII HS which would be an intermediate solution to the rod HS. Other option is the Dave Taylor which comes with the spring for $169 from Clubman.

Morning Dave,

My MKV 750 had a MKIII 850 head steady with spring for the last 7 years. Definitely better than std. Took it all off yesterday and fitted the Dave Taylor with spring. Straight away it lost the hinged feeling and handling very much improved, particulary above 60mph. Vibrations are different. I think vibrations about the same intensity but in diferent rev ranges. Smooth at 3500-4500.

I would not go back.

Cheers

Mark

I've heard plenty of good about the DT. I just got $170 for an extra convertible top cover for the Miata I had. Maybe time to spend money. I just don't like the clamp thing. Maybe I can get over it.

Dave,

What dont u like. ?

Its a neat installation and you dont see the clamp. I'll send a pic later.

I don't know, it just offends me for some reason and I have powder coat on it now. I guess, why couldn't they use the original 5/16" mounts, how hard is that? CNW does it, but more than I want to spend.

Dave, you need the "saddle" (drapes over the lower tube and bolts to the coil bracket) and U-shaped double spring (drapes over the saddle and connects to the grooved lug on the bolt-up bit at the headsteady) to complete the sprung setup. Check out the parts diagram on the '75 exploded illustration on Old Britts website.

Paul,
Thanks, but even if I get the MKIII main headsteady bracket, I still have nothing to attach the 'saddle' item 8, to since I don't have the MKIII coil bracket. I wonder if anyone has a picture of the retainer (saddle) mounted on the tube with the MKIII coil bracket, it must be pretty far forward of the headsteady?

Then even if I get the DT one, do I have anything to attach the retainer (saddle) to?

I'm calling clubman.

It is held in place by the four bolts that retain the coils to the front tank mount. As long as your bike has the same tank mount as most other Commandos it will fit.

If you're talking about item 9 here http://www.oldbritts.com/1975_g31.html, I don't have that part. Look at the picture of how my coils mount at the top of this thread, first post. I have an L shaped bracket for the coils that mounts off to the right side of the front tank attachment wings. In any case, the spring must be pulling well towards the front as well as up if the spring retainer is mounted way up there.

The plot thickens.

OK, I've got it. This hole, and the same one on the other side? I just wasn't sure how the MKIII coil bracket mounted.

Anyone know how the Dave Taylor head steady compares to the CNW head steady, other than price? I have heard that the Dave Taylor has wear issues after 6-7000 miles. Thanks.

Better late than never...

Here's the DT installation on my MKIIA 850. Sorry I can't compare it to anything else. but it works for me

I hadn't adjusted the spring when these were taken, and having seen some very sagged out isos on another rebuild project since, it definitely does a job which needs doing.

I can't comment on wear, but the rod-ends are easily replaced if it becomes necessary. Definitely putting one on my next project.

The only issue I had was the clamp closed on itself before it clamped against the frame tube, so some metal had to be removed from the clamp face (well it just wouldn't be British otherwise, would it... ). My frame is an imperial tube size, too, i.e. not 25mm.

Yes, when I had my Taylor I cut out a piece of tin can as a shim between the Taylor and frame to make it fit snug.
