MK3 Twist Grip Friction...

Planning to return to a local MK3 owners MK3 bike this W/E to get his sprag clutch replaced. While there last time, found the throttle twist grip stiff to turn and needed to be turned back to closed. He didn't mind it like this but that's just wrong IMHO. I tried to loosen the friction clamp adjustment (Numer 9 in the AN site schematic below) but it didn't want to unthread after loosening the set nut (Number 10) and didn't want ot risk damaging the slotted head. What is best procedure here, to disassemble the two cluster halves the get at the friction adjust from within?

They list three types, only 8A available...but it looks very much like what the MK2 bikes have....how does it work with the MK3 switch gear cover plates?
Neither 8A or 8B fit a MK3 with standard switchgear (unless the cluster and master cylinder are moved inboard) so I don't know why AN list those twistgrip assemblies. Plus the Mk3 throttle cable wouldn't fit either.

The quick action Amal twistgrip was introduced on the 850 Mk1 at serial 301700.

I always back the friction device right off. Of course it's possible the cables are causing the drag so need lubricating or replacing.

I bet the friction screw is backed all the way out right now. Don't force it any more or the screw will separate from the spring retainer. It is peened over on top.
Yes, open up the switch gear and clean everything and check the cables and the junction box.

Yes I keep telling to take it apart but he's hesistant...will keep trying.

When we got some wd40 into the area, it did ease up a bit but the stiffness has returned.

If you havent done so already then you could try pulling the outer cable out of the guide and get some WD40 into the cable as it sounds like it could be a sticky cable.

Im 90% sure issue is with the friction adjuster thing, not cables...needs a fair amount of force to rotate grip open and even more to rotate it back closed...stuck cable would push out of ferrule ends when closing with that much force.
