i SUSPECT ALL mk3 shift harder than do regular nortons. Any cure or something that might help?

Can you explain what you mean by "shift harder"? If it's difficult to change gears, cleaning the clutch plates up usually improves that.

The crossover linkage and gears is a bit less efficient than the older, more direct right side shift. More places where wear can occur and friction can inhibit shift action. You might try lubing the covered splined joint between the shaft coming out of the backside of the gearbox inner cover and the shaft that passes through the back of the inner primary since it's the only one that has no access to other lubrication and tends to run dry and corrode.

Mine shifts like butter. Even riders of modern bikes remark about how good it shifts.

Mine shifts perfect. Other than the fact it's on the "incorrect" side. In comparing it to a RH shift Norton, I might say I can feel a slight bit more in travel of the lever both up and down, but I think that's just a little play in the splines of the cross shaft. Very minor. Possibly here or on another forum, there was someone talking about applying a coat of JB Weld to the connecting joint and then pushing both shafts into it. I would think you would have to have a situation with severe play or wear in the splines/joint before that would be necessary. And it would seem like it would play hell to get apart later.

Re: mk3 SLOPPY SHIFTING

slop in the bushin/shaft on the primary actuator shaft gear(one with the lever)
MANY of them are cracked in tha aluminum case further loosing support for the thin bush.
Slop between the actuator gear and transfer shaft gears
yes a bit of slop in the splines in the crossover shaft
therefore Yes there is additional friction from two /shaft/bushings
Almost zero friction from crossover shaft going through the lip seal on inner primary ?

I don't think there is a further significant change in friction or slop once at the MKIII gearbox input shaft compared to the regular box

I have used a 79 Bonnie with left side shift (sounds like a medical condition) and it too required at least 3x more effort to shift. I did not investigate. This eve I will have the primary cover off the MK3 and really try to find the problem. It shifts well, no missed gears, no jumping out of gear, it's just requires more effort than a right sider.
