Hello, new to Commandos so please excuse my ignorance.
I am sure someone can answer this for me.
Is there any other differences between Mk3 Interstates and Roadsters, other than the seat and tank? Like frame lug or engine/ gearbox differences?
I would just like to add some minor detail information to what Ron L has already mentioned, as the 850 MkIII Interstates built for the UK and general export markets would normally have had the 'European' handlebars fitted, and Roadsters would have had the 'Semi-Western' bars.
Also, the majority of Interstates were supposed to have had Veglia NVT instruments and Roadsters had the Smiths NVT instruments.
Putting a different spin on this old thread that came up searching for differences between model year gearboxes.
What differences were there in the MK3 gearbox in comparison to the earlier / MK2a gearboxes? I understand that 3rd and 4th gears were strengthened with a "new pitch and profile" as I read it. Were there any other differences?
EDIT: This reference to a change came from The Norton Commando Bible author Peter Henshaw just FYI.
The only apparent 'gear' difference between the Mk2/2A and Mk3 is the sleeve gear due to the addition of a second circlip groove and shorter Mk3 bushes. Layshaft 4th is the same for both therefore no change of tooth profile.
Mk2, 2A and Mk3 all had the higher ratio 2nd gear.
No 3rd gear part number changes since 1970.
1st gear, same part numbers for all standard Commandos '68-.
