Morning all,
I'm about ready to button up the primary side of my Mk3, with a new sprag, engine sprocket and drive gear. I was about to put the original stator back on, with its repaired output wires, having already bought a single phase Podtronics unit and decided against going 3-phase.
I then spotted the RM27 stator, giving 200w, on Paul Goff's website. I might go for this, as I'm hoping to use my electric start when all this is done, and my journeys aren't long. The question is, there seem to be a number of suppliers out there; Paul has some branded Lucas, but then there seem to be offerings from Wassell, Sparkx, and probably more. Is there much to choose between these RM27 contenders? I'm guessing the Lucas offering is no longer from a factory in Birmingham, probably from an Indian outpost or some such. Is the name any guarantee of longer life and higher quality?
Where would your money go? Any horror stories about pattern stators?

Cheers, Jon

The current Lucas offering was made by LAP http://www.lapelec.co.uk/

Formed in August 1989 following a management buy-out of a division of Lucas Automotive, the company’s dynamic approach has brought about consistent expansion of its product range, markets and capabilities.

They do cost more but from reports seem to be better made and more reliable than the Wassells, Sparx offerings and would be my first choice for a alternator.

But if your current alternator is working then the 200W may be achieved on the RM27 by using 14.5V as the voltage for the output volts instead of 12V, so its really the same output as the Mk3 high output single phase.

The current production Lucas stators are not a product of LAP

Genuine Lucas stators are always supplied in the Green Lucas boxes ( LAP brand stators are still around ) normally packed in brown boxes
and are often miss sold by dealers claiming they are the Genuine article

for product confirmation check the Lucas classic motorcycle website

"Genuine Lucas" is Wassell.

In 2014, Wassell acquired the licence for the Lucas brand from Lucas Industries Limited, for Classic Motorcycle parts. In conjunction with Lucas, an extensive product development programme for Classic Motorcycle parts was initiated, to once again, establish Lucas as a market leader within the industry. Thanks, that gives me a bit more confidence in the Lucas one. I had a bad experience with a Wassell seat for a Triumph quite recently, though they responded properly. I might just give one a go.
