If the brake is on the left as per standard Mk111 then there's no space for a forward stay. The fork sliders are the same with lugs front and rear so with a swapped over brake, the earlier system is possible.
Owners of pre-MkIII models who have uprated the disc and caliper often remove the rear stay, but keep the front, because the rear one won't fit with the aftermarket caliper (and often an adaptor plate) in place.
