My MKIII has indented holes at the end of the swingarm where the adjuster bolts hit the swingarm. I assume this is not a factory design, but something done by the PO. Comments appreciated.

Re: Mkiii chain adjusters

I believe this was a factory design. I have three MkIII swingarms and they all have the indents for the bolt seat.

Re: Mkiii chain adjusters

I bought my MK3 new in '75, still have it, Be assured it did not come with any markings on the swing arm. I have , however, done an alignment with string and when I felt all was just right, marked the swing arm and adjuster with a dimple. That's my index mark. It's not from the factory, but it's accurate. I'm guessing a lot of other owners have done this too. Do it your self to check their accuracy.

Re: Mkiii chain adjusters

Whenever I adjust the chain tension on my bike, I usually adjust the drive side first and count the number of turns on the spanner, then I adjust the other side the same number of turns. As I've usually previously aligned the wheels using a string line, thus the alignment is theoretically maintained. I recently noticed that the adjusters on my swing arm have two different threads, a coarse and a fine - put there by a previous owner of the frame. So now I use a string line every time.

Re: Mkiii chain adjusters

To get back to the original question (which was nothing to do with wheel alignment or chain tension) here's one from the spares shelf- never been used.
Both sides are the same.

Re: Mkiii chain adjusters

When making machinery that has jacking screws it is good practice to drill a small dimple as shown by LAB. it acts as a location for the jack screw as force is applied stopping it from wanting to bend or slip out of line. So I would guess thats why they are there which is a nice quality touch fron Norton especially given the sad state the company was in at the time and such small touches that add to costs could easily be overlooked to save money.

Re: Mkiii chain adjusters

Yeah, but they did drill it off center.

Thank you all for the info.

lAB- my swingarm looks just like your picture. Thank you.

I now know this is a factory item....though I thought it odd since the holes were not very precise.

There is no need for precision here. As long as it keeps the adjuster bolt from wandering off the end of the swingarm.
