Large air boxes were used by Japanese in mid 70's, maybe earlier to gain low end torque or was it HP. And your pics show there is no reason to remove, jet up emission carbs and probably have a nice gain.
 
Removable air intake venturi.
Part number 06.4839 and most likely the part that made the biggest intake noise reduction.
One per intake snorkel and most likely removed very early after sale if not before.
