Hi.

I need some help from another owner of a Mk III that is still in the factory paint scheme. I just received my tank and side covers back from the painter and he seems to have misunderstood what I wanted by way of the stripe layout and the "electric start" decals for the side covers (and tank for that matter, but that is another issue). When I gave the side covers to him, they were beat-up but still retained all of the factory striping/decals. He apparently did not take pictures, measurements, or notes and simply did his own thing - with incorrect results.

He is willing to redo the side cover striping, but since I do not have any photos of the bike with side covers prior to repainting, I need a clear, close crop photo of one (and preferably both) side cover(s) in stock stripe and decal layout. I also need the width measurement of the top and the descending stripe, if they are not the same width. I would prefer the measurements in "feet-and-inches" since that is still common usage in the US.

I searched the forum for pictures of Mk III's with clear shots of a side cover, but could not locate any. Any help would be appreciated.

I think it might be helpful if you described which MkIII paint scheme you are talking about.

Sorry for not mentioning which one I was referring to. The style I am looking for is:

I am converting a '75 Hi-Rider to a road bike by swapping to an Interstate tank, seat, and pipes but leaving the original "triangular" side covers. Thanks.

My MK III had a decal that says "Electric Start" below the Commando decal. For what it is worth.

I believe when I measured mine before it was around 3mm, but that's aftermarket vinyl stripes...

Old Britts has the side panel decals complete with the pinstripe. I don't think they have MkIII 'electric start' decals with the pinstripes.

pelican - I received a measurement of 1/8" for the pinstriping from another Norton owner. 3mm = .118" and 1/8" = .125 ... close enough for my purposes.

BillT - thanks for the pointer to Old Britts. I should have checked there before starting the repainting project - they have the "electric start" decals w/pinstripes. :(

I bought the decals for my MK III from Old Britts. They had both the the 850 Commando decals and the electric start decals. They also had the pin stripe decals for the side covers but not the tank. I think each item was a different entry on the order sheet.

This is an NOS pre-Mk111 850 cover. Striping was hand lined and logo die-cut vinyl (unlacquered)

I'm really struggling with the fact that the site is cutting down my photobucket images. What can I do about it ? Did it do this previously ?

Oversized images can often be difficult to view in a post, and can disrupt the text layout. Large images use up a lot of site bandwidth I believe, so I expect Jerry added a maximum photo size limit during the forum upgrade a few months ago.

The 1024 x 768 image size seems to be large enough to show adequate detail I would have thought?

You could always crop the image before posting if you wanted to show the fine detail?

Thanks for the photos. The metal-flake bronze (I always called it gold) reminds me of what the paint on my '73 750 looked like when it was new. It has long since faded.

An update on my tale of (painting) woe is that the painter agreed to completely redo the side covers, so I'll have an opportunity to contact Old Britts for a set of decals with the pinstripe included. Perhaps I'll be a happy camper (or rather, a happy rider) by the end of this next week.

I'd be happy to help. I would be happy to send you numerous pics of Nortons I have painted for customers in colors other than black, including solid red, metallic red, solid yellow, green metallic, red metalflake and blue metalflake. I lay out all stripes by hand, using tape as a stenci, spraying stripe color first, then removing tape once main color is sprayed so it's all paint and smooth when buffed. I paint bikes for a living (www.vintage-vendor.com) , including Jerry Doe's Interstate. Check my post under "Motorcycle Related", about the 4th one down titled "Quality Motorcycle Painting at Reasonable Prices." If interested, send me your e-mail address to brent@vintage-vendor.com
Thanks,

If it helps, I recall my MKIII side panels had hand painted striping and a die cut, stick-on Commando and electric start decals.

Here is what my side panles look like now.

Put your $$ down, and any good bike painter will do you a set.

Or tell us where you are, and what you mean.... ?
