Hi guys, its been a while since ive posted and had time for my bike but finally back into it after it sitting about 1-1.5yrs due to old fibreglass tank leaking from ethanol laced fuel. Finally got a steel tank all installed, new battery and re did the oil. Wouldnt start until I undid the spark plugs and put some fuel in the the top of each one but only ran for about 30-60seconds then dies and wouldnt fire again normally via kickstart without adding fuel into spark plug holes. Im thinking the single mikuni may need a clean, ive never cleaned one can and was wondering if anyone had a link to a step by step or tips/photos on how to clean the jets, etc and take them apart n re assemble? Was so good hearin it fire up again! Thanks heaps.

If it won't idle it is most likely the pilot jet,#21 in this link.

It is easy enough to remove the bowl which has Japanese screws (JHS ??) that look like Phillips, they are not so you need to be careful not to strip the heads out.
They can be cracked with needle nose vice grips in a pinch.
The Mikuni is basic once you see inside it,it might just be a case of removing the pilot jet (slot head) cleaning it and the passage with carburetor cleaner or soaking the body then blowing it out with compressed air.

Here is a video.

Sudcois the best reference for diagrams and there is also the Mikuni manual on line. Cleaning is easy and you can replace the cheese headed screws with Allen's if you like. Much easier to rebuild than an Amal! Look into the way the cable enters the body. There are different spigots to ease the transition and make the pull much easier also.
I want someday try the newer Amals but until then the 34 Mikuni carb is a great way to smooth the starting process although it does limit you about 100 mph!
