Hi, I just bought a VM 38 mikuni but I was wondering if it has the choke on it or does it need the old fashion choke lever? Im just curious :p Thanks

The vm34 I bought has the choke lever on the carb, but you can get a cable operated attachment also.

Yes it has a choke (edit(starter assist)) lever.

I tried the choke (edit(starter assist)) cable kit and felt it to be more trouble than it's worth.
38MM? It's gonna be a tight fit. You may need to angle it a bit even with the 45 degree cable fitting.

Mikunis do NOT have a "choke".

They have a lever that you push down which enriches the mixture by decreasing the air through the pilot jet.

This allows a cold engine to start easily.

This lever should be immediately pulled up after the bike starts, and then hold the idle with the throttle for a brief warm up before riding gently away.'

It is a "starter assist", and not a choke.

I put the cable kit on my VM34 and like it a lot - the lever was hard to reach through the gas lines, etc. Had to fabricate a cable to get good length. This is on a '75 Mk III.

What bike are you putting the VM38 on? Mine came with a VM38 and I never could get it to run right so I bought a new 34 - but still interested to see if I could get the 38 to run well on the bike.

Hey Tigman

I hope to see you and your bike on the road soon! :D
If you remember when I started your bike I flipped the lever down to start and then immediately flipped it up when the bike fired up. Nearly all Mikuni's have a lever where the copy kats have a black plunger on the side.

Those of you who haven't bought a new Mikuni kit lately. The body of the carb is shorter and fatter to give you more clearance at the top. It's still tight though.
