You just need to ride more. Has winter settled in over there yet?
Even if it did wear out it wouldn't likely come apart and lock things up with the good cage. Would just get noisy in the bottom three gears.
Now if the gears and sleave bearing would last as long we would have it made. I have replaced 2 sleave bearings and a few gears in the last 90 some thousand. Jim

I ride most days (on other bikes) all year-round, as I don't own a car.
My British bikes are tucked away now until spring.

Weather is still fine (by UK standards) just a bit colder now.

Jim/L.A.B,
kinda glad this ost generated a lilttle friendly jousting.
I got some great info from you both.
Here's how I plan to attack this gearbox.
I am going to use the Hemmings rec ball bearing.
I don't race this machine. I will be long forgotten by the time this
gearbox has 100,000 miles. I get out on it for leasure riding and
have avg 600 miles a riding season.
I have a kicker oring that has failed so while in there I
figured just do the problem bearing.
Locking up the rear wheel was not figured into the plan when I
purchsed a Commando.
I'm keeping the 19 sprocket, and rev it no higher than 5000 rpms.
I enjoy it for what it is a street bike 37 years old.
It came to me w/ 8,000 mies which I believe are correct.
I am into keeping it a safe and enjoyable rider w/ limited
machining capabilities. I like seeing some of the creative mods
done by the guys on this site 8)
I'll let you know all know how I make out when I get to it.
Any pitfalls or tricks I master I will share
Marshal
