Hi guys, as I don't have any history and a list of things been down by PO's, decided to pull my layshaft out and check to see what condition my bearing is in.
Perfect as it turns out as there is a FAG roller bearing in there as the pic shows. My problem now is, how far onto the layshaft should the inner race be?
Check the pics and see that the inner racer is proud of the end of the layshaft , there is a gap between the gear and the gear boss and fourth pic shows scuffing off the 1st gear against the casing.
Q1 Should the inner race be flush with the end of the layshaft?
Q2 How big a gap should there be between the gear and the gear boss?
Q3 How proud should the 1st gear bush be out of the gear itself.
Q4 Can I use the 1st gear bush to set enough off set to stop the gear scuffing the housing by offsetting out one side?
I understand that the inner race will contol 'end float' due to where it is palced on the shaft, but if it is not on the shaft far enough , is that causing of the 1st gear on the inside of the housing?
Note how the Redline Liteweight Shockproof oil sticks to everything, happy with this product in the gearbox
Regards Mike

As far as it will go so it fits hard against 4th gear shoulder and the ends of the shaft splines.

Probably.

Yep,tap that inner race in towards the gear as far as it will go. Just love the looks of the redline shockproof gear oil ,wonder where I can get some here in Toronto, Canada ? Looks like it was almost painted onto all surfaces . I wonder if it drifts along the pushrod to contaminate clutch plates like regular oil or stays put better. Nice colour too. Me want.

Thanks guys will attack the inner race this m'ing, what are your thoughts on the 1st gear bush, see how it sticks out slightly one side, i would've thouight it needed to be flush. Will talk to Ken McIntosh about that today as I need to replace the kickstart pawl and 1st gear bush while it is apart.
Yes Redline oil is great, as my bike sits for weeks at a time while I am away at work, i can now feel confident the g'box will stay well lubed when not in use.
No signs of migration along the clutch push rod at this stage.
Regards Mike

Correct as it is I think, although yours looks as if it has worn away from being forced against the layshaft bush.

You might consider shimming the kickstart stub behind the knuckle while you've got things apart--rear Isolastic shims work well--to keep the knuckle well inside the layshaft first gear and to limit in-and-out movement of the stub to close to zero

As to the shimming of the kick-start shaft--isn't there a suggested end-float to measure? Also, from what i have read on some forums the sliding gears with bushings should be a push-fit and the fixed gear bushings should be a press fit--maybe even locktited to prevent shifting and grinding themselves away against adjacent gears.
Too bad all these "wizard" bits of info arn't all gathered together and put into one text file so when rebuilding the trans it it all there in front of you to see and follow so when completed--it's all done to the current build specifications set forth by all the "wizards". But then "different strokes for different folks".
Maybe someone here on the forum has the time to gather up all these useful tips and put them all down for people to pick and choose what they want as they do the rebuilds.

Suggested...yes.

Maybe stay away from dodgy forums which tell you that as neither of the "sliding gears" (layshaft 2nd and mainshaft 3rd) has a bush because they're splined to the shaft (unless you mean free rotating). The output shaft (sleeve gear) and 1st gear bushes should be a press fit, mainshaft 2nd and layshaft 3rd gear bushes should be a sliding fit.

Yes, well, it's always somebody else's job to write it all up.

Thanks L.A.B. for the information---we're off to a good start here.
Bushings are now documented as to how they are to be fitted---tight or loose.
After installing the lay shaft roller bearing upgrade---it is "suggested" that you check the end float on the lay shaft and you can, if you want to, use shims to shim to
.005" end play---per OLD BRITS technical notes--- or not to---it's up to you.
Transmission gear lube: Redline Lightweight Shockproof gear oil.---Depending upon availability in your area. Amazon @ $14.99 /qt. Other substitutions Anyone?

Yeah ,I need that beautifull oil here in Toronto or some product similar to it.
Can't you order that stuff on line or won't they ship it over the border? If not, I'll ship you some.

Dave I am out of time ,( 5 hrs, gonzo) so leave for Mexico for 3 months to kill fish and dance and drink Tequilla. So let's figure it out in the spring. Above zero here, plus 6 Celcius all this week so why am I going ? Ai yai yah ! Crazy torn apart beside me. Will bring the lift down to floor level now to prevent hydraulic collapse and subsequent fallover , neglected to do this one winter and Crazy was on the floor in a pool of oil.
