I used to swear by Metzeler’s back in the day, they were vastly superior to Roadrunners etc. I remember fitting ME99 and ME33 to my TSS and being gobsmacked by the difference in road holding.

Then Avon upped their game a lot with the Super Venoms, and then Roadriders.

Now Metzeler have done likewise and have a huge range, including ‘classic’ sizes.

Does anyone on here run Metzelers on their Commando, or any other classic?

Metezeler used to make an excellent tyre for the rear that was only available in a couple of sizes called the ME1, this came with their race (Com K) compound, you could also buy the front with their race compound, (but only available to special order) but the front was much more expensive than a ordinary tyre.

With a 18 inch rear on a Commando the Metzeler Roadtec 01's look like a viable choice.

Correct TW, the best Metzelers for me would probably be the 110/90 18” rear and 100/90 19” front, both Roadtec 01. They’re near identical size wise to the RoadRiders I currently use and would provide a dedicated front and dedicated rear tyre.

I ran the tyres mentioned by Bernhard on my 18 inch wheel Ducati's but even back then they were expensive and the rears triangular shape meant they were at 100% for maybe 900 kms

It was Phantoms before that, I had never considered Avons and never heard of a RoadRider before this website, when I got a pair John Deere came to mind.
It's Continental all the way now when available, I used everything from Dunlop D208GP's to Continental Road Attacks on my TL1000's and in the end stuck with Continentals on those too.
K112's for the Sunbeam.]
Triangular shape? Are we talking about the same tyre- the ME1? This tyre was neither a crossply nor a radial tyre, as the carcase weave was neutral. Or maybe u don't lean your cat over very far?

That particular tyre seems to have good reviews so you could be the first do to one for a Commando.

I missed this.
All I am saying is, on winding roads in NZ I found that tyre was premium for around 900 kms rolling transition left to right. It was still good after that but I noticed a difference.
I edited that post.

Well I raced a whole season on them (com Ks) against the same bikes shed with Dunlop KR124s. I continued to pay out for the front ME 33s with the com k for a bike on the road just durning the winter months reasoning that it was worth the money if it saved me from crashing on icy roads etc. Durning a Weds a/noon pratice session at B Hatch I managed to stay aheard of D Degens on his 500 Triumph , I was riding a 350lc, which was at 125mph. going flat out according to the 125 speedo. I could hear him changing the gearbox down everytime I approached the Druids hairpin & also he had a 8ls front brake on - and no, he didn't get past me. Happy days!

Is that you Acotrel ?

What was I thinking replying to something that had nothing to do with modern Metzelers as per N mans post... that content now deleted.

I've thrashed lots of modern bikes including track stuff with Metzlers' Classic wise my rd250c is running Metzler Me77's in Imperial proper sizes :) handled well enough in the Matlock floods and up a soaked cat and fiddle that was dry then wet then dry heavy rain etc scrub in really fast to :)

I'm considering the Me77's when the Avons wear out on the 650ss and for my Commando an elsies as well. Handy being able to get Imperial sizes so there's no fitment issues

FWIW, I updated a spreadsheet that I used when looking for an 18" rear tire, adding some new possibilities. It's nowhere near a complete list, but it worked for me. I didn't include race tires or front tires that some folks use as rears (I've done that in the past), or tires that just didn't seem suitable for a street Commando. Some of the manufacturers are much better at providing detailed specs than others. I only included revs/mile or km when the manufacturer provided it. I could have calculated it in the spreadsheet, but it didn't seem all that needed for the current discussion. I'll probably add it later. I tried to be pretty careful to only use data from the manufacturers specs, but if you find any errors, please let me know.

Oh yeah, you'll probably notice that some of the dimensions are in inches, some in mm, and some in both. I didn't label them as such, but it should be pretty obvious which are which:).

Just rebuilding a late '66 Atlas which I have fitted 325x19 ME11 and 400x18 ME77 Metzlers, I have not finished it yet but the 325x19 looks oversized compared to the 360x19 tt100 fitted to my 650SS.
