Hi folks,
I'm intending to replace the fibreglass side panels on my black roadster, with some original steel ones. As the steel ones need painting anyway I thought I'd get the tank done as well, all withthe standard gold lining & lettering, now I don't know much about paint types, but I was wonering what my options were in having the black as a metalflake/pearl/ or some kind of glitter finish. I don't know the correct terms for the different finishes. Is it possible with black? does anyone have any pics?. Anybody know a good finisher in SE UK?
Terry

Actually never thought of metallic black! If you do it post pictures. I've seen some cars with metallic black and they are really nice. Would probably look great with gold metal flake and gold Norton logo.

Old school metalflake is beautiful with black. Its on the top of my tank and edges of my sidecovers. Jim

There is a obsidian black metalic paint that is used by at least Mercedes, Infiniti, VW and others in the US.
It definitely has a metalic sparkle in the right light but no texture like a metalflake paint.
I like it on my car but I'd like it to be a deeper black if it was on my Norton.
Might be a good starting pont for a custom mix.

There are a few types, some with flakes in with the black pigment, but also in a clear coat over the black base. Auto parts offen have this in rattle can's.

One of the coolest paints I saw in late 60's was neighborhood drug dealer LSD head,
who had his BMW delivery bike in deepest dark purple with rainbow effect clear flakes along with gold and silver dust. To look deep at it would pull you into outer space, even when not high. Ms Peel is taking some lead from his in what I call Electric Koolaid.

I hope that's not the Jim Jones type of KoolAid.

black metal flake sounds really intriguing, but I'd like to see silver flake instead of gold

My bike iis silver flake in clearcoat. When you take a picture it just looks drab gray but in the sun it looks great. Jim

One of the best ways to pick a paint color is to go through parking lots and car dealership lots and find a current vehicle that has what you want. Then you can order paint for a specific year and model vehicle and be guaranteed to be able to reproduce it in the future if needed.

Another way is to visit your local automotive paint supplier and paw through their custom paint catalogs. DuPont has their "Hot Hues" line of customs, and BASF R-M has the Carizzma line of specialty paints that'll blow your mind.

A once in life time event some what related to the Deep Purple Galactic diffraction gratting flake BMW paint job, was the young man's mother had married an A-hole truck driver who hated my friend, with long hair and hippie music etc etc. Well when dealer BMW fella was getting married, he spiked the big punch bowl with LSD. Incredable event like in the movies, even the wedding was at same traditonal Coral Rock style church, but most remarkable was how much fun the old man was and had with everyone - even got alone great with his step son. Very Very educational experience that helped change my life time view of reality.

BTW a Ms Peel has more black areas than planned, but a good bit of it is moderated by the rattle can DupliColor black sparkle paint and sparkle-ice clear coat over that. Anyone can safely lick her paint and not get sick or die, just higher. OIF frame will have cyrstaline pattern developing thermal color change paint. May not need temp gauge to know temps at a glance and when ready to ride.

Thanks for the replys so far guys, I can picture what I want, but as someone said it don't work on photo's. I was thinking a normal black base with flake in the clearcoat, I was thinking that purple blue kind of colour, but now maybe gold.
I'm no painter so I'll farm it out, Theres a firm up in Essex that does Nortons, masks & sprays the lining & the logo, do a good job, I may use them, problem is I don't want flake over the gold line/logo, is that possible?
Been a lovely sunny autumn day here in Kent.

Myford, It wouldn't be metal flake, but the new Triumph's have a black they used on the daytona 675 SE that was beautiful called phantom black I only saw one once, but believe it looked black with hints of purple metalic in it. May check it out. It is a nice black in the sunlight.

Put decal or stencil on after the flakes.
Here's a sight to review.

Metalflake black?

Thanks for the links Hobot, I never realised there was so much choice. I guess my next step will be talk to the sprayer, I don't want the flake too dense, just that starry dark night 3D effect.

Yes a good term for what I remember so well, Stary Nigh Deep Space. Love your tastes, can't wait to drool over the expensive display some day. Dust like particles
can only be seen by their points of light that eye can't focus on yet still sharp as tacks impression.
