Anyone heard of these Megapower 2 belts? The only make I've come across before is Synchroflex AT10 which seem OK.

The only belts I will use are the Synchroflex tan belt or the Gates Synchropower belts.

There are a few belts around that will not handle motorcycle duty -although I do not know about the Megapower 2 belt except to know they can be purchased really cheap.

That's useful, thanks.

Is there really nobody on here who has any experience with these Megapower 2 belts? I've asked this on other forums as well, and so far not one person has come forward with any experience of them, or any knowledge about them. If this is how it is, I wonder whether I was supplied with one mistakenly and the reason nobody else has come across them is that they aren't suitable for motorcycle primary drive applications.

If you're reading this and you do have any experience of these belts, please let me know. Thanks.

Who’s belt kit is it? And who supplied the belt?

Since it is a syncroflex type belt it is likely to be an RGM belt drive.

Sorry, it is an LP Williams primary drive kit, which originally came with a Synchroflex AT10 belt. After 10000 miles and 6 years I thought I'd better put a new belt on (having read horror stories on forums about what happens if you don't). I bought the replacement belt from LP Williams, and got this Megapower " belt.

I could and probably should have posted this thread in the Triumph section - please don;t ask why I didn't, all I can say is that I haven;t been thinking too clearly in the past few days due to all manner of reasons! I suppose I also guessed that if these Megapower 2 belts are in anything like common use as primary drive belts on old bikes, Norton Commando owners would be as likely as Triumph owners to have experience with them. But it looks as if nobody has even heard of them, which is a bit worrying in itself.

I have looked at that belt. The Megapower may be fine. I don't know where they are manufactured but the home company is in Italy.

I have just stuck with what I know.

And the last time I wore out a synchropower belt it had around 70,000 miles on it.

If your belt doesn't show cracks around the OD it will probably last a lot longer, but I always carry a spare.

Most belt failures are due to over-tensioning or mis-alignment. Barring these problems they last a long long time. Jim

Personally, I’d be inclined to go with the belt if it is what the belt drive kit supplier is offering. Maybe worth giving them a call / email though to sound them out?

I've done that - the answer so far is (to paraphrase) that they don't know anything about these belts, they just pass them on from the people who supply them, who they trust to supply only good quality belts. In view of the fact that the Megadyne website has a technical download which includes a caution that these belts are not suitable for use in synthetic oils (coupled with the fact that my belt has stretched noticeably in 3000 miles of use), I have no confidence at all in the product.

My transmission is not adjustable.
I don't see any stretch after the first 50 miles or so using the Gates or Synchroflex belts.
I suspect that is more seating in to the pulley than stretch. But then my belt runs dry.

Might be more useful if you noted the application. I believe you said Triumph. Being a Norton forum fewer people are likely to experience with that vendor.

@L.A.B. should be able to move this to the Triumph area.

If that’s the case I’d be inclined to agree with you.

Hi

L P Williams have a good name. The point with a Trident is if your belt drive is a Hayward type ie under original primary covers & not a Peckett/Newby separate dry primary clutch if the belt strips the crap goes straight into the engine.
kims Triplesonline is a good site & LAB will reply to you there lol:D

All the best Chris

Thanks Chris. In case anyone is following this, the latest is that I bought a Synchroflex GEN III belt from the main Conti outlet in UK and fitted it today. Comparing it with the Megapower 2 belt, it is wider. 2mm wider to be precise. I didn't think to check when I bought it last year - I just took it for granted that LPW would only send the right thing. But it is 30mm, whereas it should be 32mm (the receipt says 32mm belt). Just handling it, the Megapower belt feels noticeably more 'floppy'. The new belt has the same kind of tension that the original Synchroflex belt had, ie: just right. The Megapower belt has (on very close inspection) numerous fine lines across the outer surface - no idea whether they were there to begin with or have developed during use. They don't look like cracks or splits, but they are of raised appearance.

The only other thing to mention is that despite me appealing for info from anyone who has any experience with these Megapower belts on this, the Britbike Triumph forum and the T140 facebook forum, nobody has. I'll have this resolved by the end of next week and will report on here. I reckon it was a bit of a cock-up, completely accidental, on the part of LPW, who will, I expect, deal with the issue very fairly and take steps to make sure something like it doesn't happen again.

Possibly of interest on here even though this in my case it's a Triumph, is that the Belting online site, from whom I bought the GEN III belt, charged me slightly less than the price of less good belts available elsewhere, and it arrived the next day. They can do any size you like, it seems, so Commando belts can be got from there. The site has plenty of info on the GEN III belts.
