Meanest sounding exhaust

Dunstall Decibel "silencers", i used to have a pair, never liked the look but the sound - especially banging down through the gears engine braking into corners - can't beat that growl.

The Dunstalls have a lower mellow sound. The stock peashooters that came on my combat when it was new were pretty loud and had a nasty bark to them especially when downshifting into 2nd gear. But not all peashooters are created equal. I have some Toga peashooters on there now and they are a bit tamer. My friend's '71 when new were not as loud as the '72 version.

I saw some stock peashooters in the '74 era that were bought as a replacement that were really restrictive. We had to take a long 1" diameter metal stake and drive it in from the rear to make them so the bike would actually run. This was suggested by our local dealer!

There was a bike at the INOA Hammond Lake rally this year that was outrageously loud and "mean" but I never found out what he was running. This was much louder than straight pipes. Maybe someone else remembers it.

I cant believe the dealer suggested the metal stake!, I would be interested to hear what kind of pipes that bike at INOA was running..Thanks for the reply.

The statement "not all peashooters are created equal" could not be more succinctly stated!

Vikings have a nice crisp raspiness, and the Norton stamped units are nice in thier own way.

It's really a personal preference; one man's "bark" is another man's "rasp"...

I actually don't like to encourage this but a Kenny Dreer 880 with hollowed out reverse cones is the meanest and the most obnoxious Commando I've heard.
It's really to loud for the street.

I agree the VR880 sounds simply fantastic, do you prefer a more stock sounding exhaust? To the few of you who have not heard this before, here is a vid of the VR880 to prove they sound great.

I always liked the sound of the Bub Conti replicas on a Norton. I had a set on my cafe racer, but over the years the chrome has worn thin. If I can find a plater that would do it, I'll have them re-plated. Bub doesn't make them any more.

Hell a real friggin hooligan  sounds great too  wish I was 40 years younger and not punch drunk.

My 2 to 1 with a short open reverse cone megaphone is pretty anti-social. So much so that I'm thinking of buying a supertrapp or something that has at least some baffling.
Meanest sounding exhaust

There is more to the sound than the just the exhaust.
Displacement, compression, cam etc ...

I had a Dreer and ditched the hollowed pipes for 1 1/2" Pea shooters from Clubman. Still sounded meaner than any other Norton around.
Crisp and solid.
It idled better, felt a little stronger on the bottom and still had great run out.
I could now pull up to a stop light and split traffic without people having to hold their ears.
(I want to insert one caveat here, the pipes from Clubman had 1 1/2" intake with 1 3/8" exit. Go figure?????)

I will admit the Dreer with hollowed pipes does make a beautiful noise.
However as it has been said, 'one man's music is another man's noise.'

What pipes are you looking at or considering?

Earlier this year I was at the Irish NOC meeting in the South West of Ireland (strangely enough!) One of the guys had a 750 Commando with stainless Pipes from armours in England, they were much louder than std peashooters with a right crack to them. If you want to scare the neighbours I'd reccommend them!

Thanks for the reply, do you still own the Dreer? Any pictures of the Dreer, I love the look of those bikes.

I have a friend who has a recently completed Mk III with a Leo Goff built 920 engine and the Viking 1-5/8ths headers and peashooters . I heard it idle once but that was awhile back . I want to hear ir again now that I have a stock 850 of my own with pea-shooters to compare it to . Actually , I want to take him up on his offer of a ride
