Can anyone tell me if a Mark 3 gear shift lever will fit a pre-Mark 3 stock Commando gear shift shaft? And if so, roughly what length is the Mark 3 lever? I want to use an alloy lever in reverse for a race bike with the same shaft diameter and splines as the AMC box. Dave

Yes it will fit. The MK3 lever is 4.5 inches from the center of the shaft to the center of the peg on the lever. Jim

I just measured my MKIII shift lever. It measured about 5" from end to end. If you were to put this one on an older model, the orientation would be reversed putting the bottom on top. This would move the cinch bolt from the bottom to the top. Hope that is what you were looking for.

Jim, Calbigbird — thanks for that! The Quaife 'box in my Seeley has a reverse camplate and Norton splines, so a reversed lever that is not canted outwards should work well.

Dave

The only problem you might have is the lever splined hole is counter bored removing half the width of the splines, this plain counter bore is supported on the Mk3 shaft, but wont be on any other. This may cause some weakness and ultimately premature failure if not addressed.

Cash — thanks for that tip. I may be able to do something about that. Many years ago, I made an alloy splined lever for another make of bike by pressing a scrap splined shaft into a hole of the correct ID. I still have the lever and the splines are still good. I would have tried this for the Quaife but I only have one shaft that I don''t want to risk damaging. Dave
