Some video I shot today of making billet headsteady brackets.

Jim,

I didn't realize the 4th axis was made from a lathe...didn't see the tail stock. That is brilliant.

Love to see chips flying :D

Dennis

I have one of those on my bike. Nice to see all that goes into the machining of a unit. Makes you appreciate it all the more.

The fourth axis is a microstepping motor with a lathe style chuck as one option.
If you look close you can see the Suzuki rotor and Triumph caliper used as a brake for the 4th axis.

Yes I saw the brake and the stepper when I was in Pueblo...didn't see the tail stock. So that is an add on to support the work? It's pretty ingenious.

The proverb for this millennium is "If you buy a machine to work for you, You will work for it" Looks like you may have reversed this proverb.

Tell us you're not using your exhaust venting system from your dyno to pull those chips out of there.

Well I am working on it now. It is out of commission until I get a bearing to replace the Y ballscrew support that chunked last night.

The exhaust extractor does help get rid of the fumes. My daughter does the chips....as long as I pay her and let her sell the scrap. Jim

The chips sure fly out of there on the video.

Are these the same as your previous ones? They were the nicest mounts I've seen, till maybe now.

Can we order them directly from you? THX for all your dedication to quality parts for our bikes.

I am continually making small improvements to make them lighter and/or stronger. The link between the two joints has been made so it is easier to adjust if needed. Adding more dedicated tooling has improved the finish.

Yes, they can be ordered directly from me although I do not provide the polishing service that CNW does. Jim

Thanks Jim, Love to see all the great stuff you put together. Not just the parts you make but the machines too, Awesome!! Carry on.

oK jim quit with the side show > we gotta know - what's the best oil to flush the fish and chips with at the temps expected?

Never use oil for fish an chips. Always cook your chips in a good quality lard. (Not sure of the American equivalent for lard but i bet Google knows)

Ok toppy lard is standard hi temp animal fat cooking flavor of rancid-crispy finger food world wide. Too bad whale oil is so costly eh. Peel processing trips have made me friends with machinists that gave me tours of programing CNC machining to re-loading their robotic magazines of tooling bits. Most impressive is a tool/die shop in deep woods the owner had to act like 5 axis controller spinning milling machine handles in opposite cycles of matched reversing directions similar to skill to draw a straight diagonal diamond on a two knob Etch-A-Sketch while Peel wheel hub was rotated on table. So I only know enough about this subject to know the owners stress a lot on making their equipment investments pay for themselves in cut throat cost cutting market.

Here's a different use of otherwise wasted metal chips, making Orgonite energy art objects.

Hobot i make jet engine shafts on large CNC machinery and also 31 foot long oil field parts on CNC lathes with live tooling milling heads giving full 6 axis machining. I must be a bit sad as i always like to see them effortlessly carve up metal that would have taken far longer to make when i started manual machining years ago.
Jim is a clever man though and i can appreciate the time and effort he has put in to his set up.

Heyho toppy, I do appreciate not having to get up to turn stations and re-fiddle the rabbit ears. When ever I read about your scale of machine work I flash back on scenes in "Sand Pebbles" Chinese seaman mashed by crank shaft slip. Metal working is fascinating to me to see just don't care to be that attentive, too much like restaurant job, I just want to be a lazy pilot. Had drill press for couple decades but ain't ever used it yet have to learn for doing surface swirl polishing patterns [engine turning-machining] that don't leave machine marks like a billet dash board but optical 3D rainbow vortexes that only look like needle tips ya could prick a finger on. Wonder if whale oil wipe would keep shiny or just smell to much?

You had a drill press??? was it a Winchester or a Remington? (I have seen how you "drill" holes in metal parts  )

Very cool Jim. Thanks for sharing that vid. More though, THANKS for helping us all keep our Norton's good and safe for 2015 traffic conditions with the excellent upgrades that you have designed and created.
