The original main switch can be a source of hard to diagnose running problems.

I had a odd power failure that turned out to be from corroded switch contacts.

I took one apart to show what the insides look like after 40 years.
Yes, they can be cleaned up and returned to service!

Main switch repair...
 
good to know...have heard the same is true of the control switches on the handlebars, they can be disassembled and the contacts can be cleaned
 
Yes, they can be cleaned up,,,,,,,,,and still are barely serviceable. :) The repop switches aren't any better either.

Boy do I agree. I don't like the aftermarket switches I have on my bike but I don't feel I have a choice.
 
I repaired the ignition switch on my 69, it was hogging all the current. All it needed was a bit of clean up and some new de-ox on the contacts, but it wasn't as complicated as the pictured one. I put it back together with a few 6-32 brass screws. Works great.

Yeah, neglected British electrics are a horror story. I couldn't get a spark until I found and corrected this mess in my kill switch:
