Can anyone please tell me what wires go where on my main switch, the one with the key if I am not using the correct term. I have a 75 e start Commando with a 4 position switch. I believe it is the original. I took it apart and cleaned it all up just not sure if it is hooked up correctly. Thanks

There's a diagram showing the switch for a 75 about half way down the page.

If original Lucas, the switch terminals should be numbered.

Thanks for that but I am not even sure which pole is which on the switch. I can see no markings. There is one connector by itself and the other 3 are linked that you can attach 2 wires to a single pole. I am not sure where to start.

I'm guessing your switch is the correct Lucas item, so the single spade terminal is terminal 4 = blue/yellow [UY] wire.

Working in a clockwise direction from 4, all others are doubles and the next double, is terminal 2 = White [W], continuing clockwise then 3 = brown/green [NG], then 1 = brown/blue [NU].

OK, see if that works.

If it does happen to be a pattern switch then the terminal numbers could be arranged in a different order (perhaps 1,2,3,4 instead of 1,4,2,3), however, the single spade connector should still be terminal 4.

I must still have a bad switch. Wired the way you show gives me a constant on tail light and no head light. Switching it to the other config gives me nothing.

Do you have a multi meter (or you could use a battery & bulb)? If so, you could check continuity between the terminals at each of the four key positions (Parking lights-Off- IGN.-IGN & Lights .

Sorry, just got back to play again. Using a continuity tester the single pin #4 does not have any connection with any of the other pins in any key position. I assume it should.

The only thing you should assume is that after 38 years, is that your P.O.S. Lucas switch is even more useless. Upgrade ,no one will know or care.

Not really as everyone wants to push their product , but use the subject search function on this forum.

Did you turn your switch on at the headlight shell away from vertical?
you may have a head lamp without a pilot light.

You could take the expired beer can and wrap it around the switch wires, that would make a better more reliable and less confusing connection. Also Beer is a conductor of electricity , not dissimilar to a Lucas ignition switch. I switched to a generic 3 position off the shelf type that works perfectly after all these years. My next switch will be on- or -off to all circuits only to simplify even more. Ha.

The 850 MkIII doesn't have the headlamp toggle switch.

I am not sure what is happening with some of my posts, I don't see them in the thread. Are they just going to individuals? Anyway, The single pole on the switch #4 does not seem to connect with anything in any key position. I had the switch all apart, cleaned and reassembled. I must have missed something. Off to Autozone today to see if they have anything that might work.
