Hi Gents. just gone to fit the new centre stand kit purchased from AN 06-4874 & it fits a treat
attempting to fit the return spring after making up a cheeky "T" handle puller with hook... its beat me to physically pull the spring apart that far to engage it into the cross brace of the stand,
The other point is when the stand is retracted the coils of the spring physically touch the underside of the gear box
also made sure the spring was fitted in the correct direction

Now checking the old spring against new there are differences
The old spring is longer overall
From the last spring coil to the hook that engages in the gearbox carrier the distance is also longer
The diameter of the spring at the coils is smaller

I ordered the kit against the correct year, so has anyone else had this problem & do i need an alternative spring??.... or kit:(

I don't see how that would be possible unless you have the sping in the wrong hole as the coils are not under the gearbox when in the retracted position.

My mistake Les....in the down position
I have tried the spring in both directions and the rounded end of the spring engages into the stand
I have to say the spring resembles yours.
How close do the coils come to the gearbox casing on yours ... when the stand is down please??

Just looking on the AN site.... when you look at the spring alone, it does look different from the one in the kit?? ... or is this photographic trickery

I just checked with the bike on the ctr stand, there is about 5/16 inch (8mm) space between the spring and gearbox .

A little under 1/8".

My spring looks similar to the one shown in AN's kit. "Alone" image seems to be the same spring.

the old way to install spring was to fill the coils with washers to separate , the spring grows longer , then not so much of a tug ....

I remember when I did mine I hooked the spring up first and then muscled the stand into place doing one bolt and then bending the stand until I got the other one in. I was a lot stronger back then.

Old way is a good description. I found this way to be useless. What worked was to make
a spring pulling tool (I used stout nylon twine with a loop attached to the spring and the other end
of the twine attached to a loop of heavy wire which wrapped around a stout piece of wood as. pulling
handle. Then sit on the ground behind the rear wheel and pull the spring to it's locating hole.
It helps to have someone guide the spring into the hole while you pull. This seemed simple after
fiddling with the washers in the spin method.

olympus, are you sure that the upper hook is completely through the plate? If not it will hold the coils higher. I had to replace mine and had a hell of a job getting the upper hook through. In the end I resorted to grinding a bit off of it, as I've mentioned in this post https://www.accessnorton.com/NortonCommando/centre-stand-spring-problem.27052/

Cheers,

cliffa.

I recently fitted a new stand by installing the spring first and then pulling the stand back using an Irwin woodwork ratchet cramp connected to a loop of twine around the back wheel. Worked a treat, especially since I had to do it three times because the holes in the stand were the wrong size for the new bushes ( fixed with new undersized bushes from Norvil).

What is interesting here is that the spring hole in the cradle on Les's machine is basically directly above the left hand stand pivot bolt .... mine is 15mm forward of the hole
That is why the spring is touching the gearbox in the down position
Time to drill a new hole

It might look it, as it is forward although the action of the spring has elongated the hole in the direction of the bolt.
