I have a set of Mk2 crankcases that have been machined to take a magneto, but no mounting studs are fitted.
I want to fit a blank plate and it would be nice to get it right so a mag could be fitted if needed later.
How critical is the positioning of the studs for chain tension and timming of the mag ?

Where's it mounted? Behind the timing cover? I have a motor with the magneto (Joe Hunt) mounted there but others were mounted on the end of the cam.

Yes its behind the barrels on the timing cover as per domminator.
There is only a small amount of adjustment via the mounting studs.
As a matter of interest how do you find the joe hunt? Has it been good?
I am using a trispark ignition but I want to get it right just incase I ever need it.

I raced over 15 years with a Joe Hunt Magneto and highly recommend it. No ridiculous hidden-inside-armature capacitor, no irregular point-slip-ring, separated high and low voltage coil and it works a treat.

I have never seen the domminator setup.
How much will the stud position affect the timing and chain adjustment?

That Joe Hunt looks like a tight fit, looks like the studs may have to be spot on.

I run a vintage Joe Hunt magneto just like the one above on my race bike and it has been excellent. Surprisingly when we swapped and ran the points-driven magneto against electronic ignition back to back on the dyno we only had a 1hp loss in power running points- for the great convenience of running without a battery, I can live with a 1hp hit.
