Magnetic oil filter

There was some discussion on the main forum last year about magnetic oil filters. I couldn't find photos of the application in practice, so I thought I would share these with you. The photos are of the Magnom Mini filter (http://www.magnom.com) disassembled, and fitted to a T150V (belonging to a friend in London) and a Matchless G50.

They would appear to be a good addition to dry sump machines with external oil pipes and no paper element oil filter. Flow resistance is minimal and the design is quite clever.

Disassembled, new. The magnetic flux draws the ferrous particles in between the plates and away from the oil flow path.

For Commandos with spin-on filters, perhaps a better option would be a wrap-round filter magnet to trap tiny ferrous particles. The T150V above has a newly rebuilt engine. I will be interested to see what the magnet looks like when the engine has a few miles on it, because the Triumph already has a oil filter. I will be plumbing one in to my own G50 after I finish its winter rebuild.

Nice pics - a few guys over in the Laverda forum have used those too. On my Norton i have big magnet placed /duck taped on the end of the oil filter (http://www.ebay.com/itm/CORVETTE-C4-LT1 ... 2415wt_918) that pretty inexpensive and works well. on bikes that lack a large oil filter and have an oil tank those look like a nice option - though i think magnetic sump plug are available for $20 or so (which i have on my Triumph and BSA) - i agree i was surprised after i redid my 650 twin triumph at the amount of ferrous material the magnetic plugs (one in the sump and one in oil tank) picked up in the first few miles (a bit scary really!)

Are the magnetic filters plumbed into the oil cooler circuit on Laverda triples?

Yes that is where i have seen them placed - i think there's a bit of controversy (on a forum - i don't believe it!) on the placement in the cooler plumbing with flow etc etc - i have a magnetic sump plug on mine, but its always really clean
