Look, before any smart arse says it, I’ll say it first: Yes. I’m very aware that I’m a Luddite.

And being a Luddite has led me to bemusement at some of the unnecessary crap foisted upon us: Like why does every appliance have a digital clock, just how many clocks does one kitchen need? Why does every appliance have at least a dozen functions that no one ever uses? Etc

Last week I bought a new electric shaver. It has blue tooth connectivity and there’s an app for it to give data on my shaving effectiveness.

FFS.

Personally, I’ve always found a mirror satisfactory for that.

Can anyone beat that for utterly pointless technology ??

The more technical they make stuff ..the more likely it or some part of it will break down
My Mrs has a pet hate for "vampire appliances" that suck power when not in use...(I thought she has gone mad...turns out she was right )...she turns off everything at the wall
apart from fridge/freezers...thankfully 😉
So all those lit up digital clocks just blink/flash when the appliance gets turned on to be used...old school clock on wall.
I drive a manual tooth brush and shaver 😁

My Dad has a washer/dryer all in one machine that has wifi/bluetooth controls, so one can monitor the washing/drying cycles while away...what fun! He's never figured out how to use his cell phone to do anything other than make/answer calls. Can't even get to his voice messages let alone email/internet.

He also bought an on-demand water heater for his kitchen sink, with bluetooth temp setting. Thankfully it still has a manual turn knob for him to dial in the temp he wants....and it just stays there forever.

I was browsing through my KitchenAid fridge manual one day to fine out what water filter cartridge it needed and how to remove it without knackering something. Came across a settings section for the digital control panel. "Holiday" mode to perform some kind of deep defrost program; Also, a "Sabbath" mode, so's the interior light does not come on upon door opening....permitting fridge access if one is quite strict about not using any electricky during sabbath. Wonder if those that have a problem with religions in general were ever consulted about their money going into such features?

I sympathize - as a long standing Luddite I have fostered an acronym.
I.N.I.D.I.S.
“ It’s new - it’s different- it s_cks”
My wife bought a new range/oven for our kitchen. Nothing wrong with the old one other than it wasn’t stainless like the other appliances. $$ later I found out you have use your phone for certain functions. AAGGHH ! YOUR PHONE TO OPERATE THE F_ _ _ ING
STOVE !
Is there any reason why the person who developed this function should be allowed to continue breathing oxygen that a cockroach could put to better use ?

It has nothing to do with your convenience or comfort. Your appliances are spying on you! All that blue tooth stuff just reports back to the Central Scrutinizer who will use that info to direct personalized ads at you, and report you to the Brain Police should you deviate from expected social norms. TV was just a dry run.

what irritates me about having a clock display in every appliance is that they are never in sync, the clock display in the electric oven is always out of time with the clock display in the microwave etc etc. Why cant they be made to sync to an RDS signal?

and while we're at it...... 'smart' TVs that become dumber everytime the manufacturer 'updates' them. I have a Panasonic 'smart' TV that works perfectly as a TV, but none of the 'apps', i.e. YouTube, work anymore. And a Panasonic PVR that could be programmed remotely by a phone app, suddenly that no longer works....

re. shavers..... grow a beard.

My otherwise great car has a truly ironic inane feature...
About 10 seconds after driving off, a message pops up on the screen warning me that I must keep my eyes on the road - FFS!! Have not read all the words yet because... I'M DRIVING!
It has an ACCEPT and DECLINE button. Don't know why but I have not hit the decline button - yet.
If they were serious, surely the car would not move until this little contract was agreed to?
Grrrr!!

I think I am both a luddite and a curmudgeon!

You need to hit the decline button… we NEED to know what happens if you do…?
