Lucas Flashers

I heard that the original old Lucas turn signals were in metal and not in plastic and this surprised me..
what is your experience?

The ones that were on my 850 back in the 1970s were chromed plastic.

If they were ever metal I would be surprised.
I have some square BM ones from a bit earlier, that I thought about using.
But they are surprisingly heavy, and I'm sure wouldn't last long.
Or the stems may need to be made stronger, and a stronger mounting...

I still have the original flasher on my 1973 Commando and its metal.

The ones on my 1973 850 are chromed plastic, when you take them off and look inside them.

They are all plated plastic. The pattern ones look similar but not exact copies. When you see the price of genuine you will buy the pattern!

The pattern ones are very inferior to the genuine ones they rust inside and stop working

Here is how you tell what they are made of. You accdently bump into them cause they stick out a country mile. And then you look at the damage you did. And they are cracked where the stalk/tube/stem enters the housing. Because they are crap chrome plated plastic.

Genuine Lucas flashers have been plastic chrome plated for many years and are now back on the market for sensible price

Hey Stephen - either the turn signal gives or you get a chunk of flesh removed from your leg if the material were stronger.

A number of years ago when I bought my Norton Commando one of the turn signal assemblies was a Lucas copy. Amazingly enough this Lucas copy was made of cast metal and is not plastic. The only information on this turn signal assembly is that the lens says 'Made In Japan'. I would say that this turn signal was probably made in the 1970's because it uses the chrome plated external jam nut on the indicator head. I wish I had three more of them because this is a better quality turn signal. Then I would have them rechromed. However, the Lucas lenses are of a better quality and they fit this indicator head.

So if you are out there in swap meets and see old turn signals lying around, they may in fact be die cast metal. Here is a picture of my 'Made In Japan' Lucas copy:
