Original LUCAS headlight

My 1978 BMW flat twin which I've owned since 1981 has an E marked headlight and I know that hasn't been changed during my ownership.

I doubt a 75 would have an E marked headlight,

Before April 1, 1986: Vehicles were not required to have E-marked headlamps.
On or after April 1, 1986: Vehicles are required to use E-marked headlights.

Maybe Lucas were ahead of the requirement but 11 years ahead ?
🤷‍♀️ Who knows just found another Halogen marked 700 headlamp on ebay from a T140 Bonneville with a E11 marking

According to google

The Triumph T140E model, introduced in early 1978, was the first to feature a halogen headlamp bulb as a standard upgrade from the previous incandescent bulbs.

According to John Nelson's Bonnie book it was all '78. My '78 T140V also has an E11 marked headlamp but I don't know if it's the original.

According to the Mk3 parts book, US Mk3's still had what appears to have been a flat dip headlamp with the BPF 370 bulb so any Mk3's that returned to the UK could have a flat dip headlamp that would be legal to use in the UK.

Mine always been a UK bike since day one, so I think I'm looking for a h/light like picture 1

I have made contact with BEAULIEU MOTOR MUSEUM they have an untouched 1975 Commando Interstate and have kindly sent me some images of the factory fitted headlight. Just above the LUCAS logo that's in a rectangle is a HALOGEN logo to the left as you look at it it has the numbers 700 in a vertical line, on the right side E11 in a circle below that it reads Y317 and to the right of that are 8 numbers in a vertical line but I cannot read them. I have also contacted the guy who purchased a museum bike a 29 miles only 1975 Commando roadster (whom I bought the original black cap exhaust from) to see what his headlight was like, he to furnished me with some images his only has the LUCAS logo in a rectangle, below that it has 700 headlamp below that it reads MADE IN ENGLAND to the left as you look at the front it reads SAE MR 71on the right it has 8 numbers in a vertical line reading 5457246? So I'm none the wiser it would appear that the bikes are fitted with what was available at the time. 🤷‍♀️
I just checked my original (assembled in 77) UK Commando Mk 3 and it has the same headlamp markings as this

This was what was on my MKIII

Then that's the US market Mk3 BPF vertical dip headlamp and should be a 370 bulb I mentioned in post #25. Halogen headlights not being legal in the US at that time.

My '79 T140E originally had a headlight that used a BPF lamp. One of the first things I did to the bike was install a Cibie Z beam unit with an H4 lamp. It's brilliant (ha!).

I have a couple extra NOS ones in the orignal Lucas box, can bring to the Nov 2 HansenDam rally if anyone local needs one.
