Lucas 3-Phase Stators

I will be buying a 3-phase stator but I note that Lucas offers two different items.

One is part # 47244 with output current of 14.5 amps

The other is part # 47252 with an output current of about 10 amps.

Does anyone know whether one or both of these are suitable for a 71 Commando and whether there is any difference between the two other than current output?

I got the bigger for my 71 FB
I did not know there was a 120 watt three phase (10 amps x 12 volts = 120 watts ?)

I got the lot here, stator, rotor, RR.
The rotor was a nice sliding fit on the crankshaft.

Thanks T W and kommando. I wanted to be sure that they both will physically fit and that the 14.5 amp version wasn't excessive current/watts.

I thought the RM 24 was 15a.
Is this a misprint, or do they make two different RM24's?
If so, has there always been 2 different Rm24's?

I thought the one I got was 180 watt (15A ?) but do not know much about electrical so got the three phase with as many watts available after asking here (or might have BB.com) .. I seem to remember Kommando and L.A.B giving advise and followed that.

Even then, rotors and stators were available from numerous manufacturer's... I thought the ones I got were Lucas (the boxes say so) but may not be Lucas Lucas but some other source in a Lucas box. :oops:

I asked because I spoke to Brandon at Steadfast in the U.S. He told me that all of the suppliers you list access them from a single Chinese maufacturer.

Do you know anything about this?

I think that has been mentioned before. I don't know if it is true or not (probably is) although I believe the LAP ones were supposed to have been made in the UK.
 
The published output varies.



There are both 'low' and 'high' output RM24 stators.




Low output on '79-on model year Triumph twins. High output (with triple Zener pack) on electric start models (1981-on).

Yes the negative earth T140's used a bank of 3 zener on a single piece of aluminium, you connected each one of the 3 zeners to one phase of the 3 phase alternator before the power got to the rectifier.
 
@APRRSV sometimes bigger is not always better.

Lucas 3-Phase Stators

This is for a MKIII but other than the starter, your 71 is the same.

Typically in normal riding, we are drawing under 10 amps.
Think about what you are consuming and try and match your charging system to that.

Going three phase is a good idea - you are charging at lower RPMs so it’s better suited to today’s riding and stop go traffic.

But unless you are going to fit electric start and have heated gloves, the RM24 10.5 amp stator (47252) is more than adequate for your 71.

This is interesting. I understand that in an alternator, the fields can be switched on according to the load required, now there is a 3 phase that uses all the three phases on full power, this requires 3 zeners that don't have to be matched, which is OK, my question is could they be connected in any old fashion or do they have to be connected in the right order?
 
When I used that T140 zener setup on my Commando I never bothered which zener was connected to which phase.
