Looking for some help in Glasgow, Scotland

I have my Mark 3 engine in bits and wondered if there was anyone around the Glasgow area with expertise to help me put the bike back together. I am willing to pay for this service as required.

I would be happy with a skillful owner or a home based mechanic.

All the bits are there and just waiting to get bolted together. I did try it myself before and the results weren't a pretty sight hence the reason for the second rebuild.

Any pics of the carnage?

The engine is in bits but every bit is present. I think that if I got some assistance to put the engine back together then I would be able to sort out the cycle parts. There's a new loom fitted as well as Pazon ignition.

Colin,
Not that I'm qualified in any way to give advice, but happy to help if there is any thing I can do.
Regards,
David

the first things to consider are that everything is clean and in usable condition. what are the sizes of the crank journals measured in at least for places 90 degrees apart and each side of the journals. I they come within specs, you can now assemble the crank with new bolts and nuts and torque them up to 25 foot lbs. [ have you crack tested the cranks etc ] aree the con rods in good order, no cracks dents scratches etc and are the bearing tunnels up to specs. small end to specs etc. This work perhaps be checked by a good engine reconditioner or bike mechanic. [ they don't have to specialize in nortons but they need to be enthusiastic about the old classics ]
no point in giving you any more facts yet till you have confirmed the above.
I'm 12,000 miles away so no real help to you.
regards, Dereck.
ps ,I've been to Glasgow, performed at Belahouston park back in the 80"s. Ill leave what we did there to your imagination. They usually perform at Glasgow Green now, and the world champs will be on 16th aug this year. D

Hi Dereck, I'm presuming that you were performing at the World Pipe band championship.

The rods have been polished and checked. The journals have been reground and new shells ready to be fitted. Trouble is finding a company interested in working with classics. Small ends seem to be fine. Bearings seem fine with no tight spots.

hi colin, you say the journals have been ground,i assume you mean the big end journals, who did them, its very important to have the 90 degree radius here, chris

Hi Colin, you need to know if those journals were ground according to the specs, so get someone to check that out for you. Any good reconditioner or mechanic who is enthusiastic about classics should be ok.
" you guessed right as well " 1975 Corby, 1980,1987 and1989 Glasgow. Best of NZ against the WORLD.
all the best, Dereck

Dont rely on Haynes Manuals..they are rubbish! My Hayes shows a engine covered with crap beening stripped...first rule..clean parts before dis-assenbly!
With common sense Norton engines can be home built..

I know what Haynes manuals are like so tend not to use it. I have the Mick Hemmings DVD's as well as a Clymer, I think, manual.

The engine was running previously on the journals so i presume that they will be fine.
