I have now burned through three new sprag clutches in my Mark III, with each of them lasting only a few weeks - or probably 20 to 40 starts, before failing.
I have also replaced the engine sprocket (twice now) and the starter gear.
Assembly has always been precisely by the book, the bike doesn't backfire, the anti-backfire device is set with correct torque to slip at 50 ft lbs.
Despite multiple conversations with Fred at OldBritts and brainstorming with others in the know, this problem keeps recurring - the sprag starts to slip, thus not engaging the engine sprocket. On removal, one or more of the teeth on the sprag has shifted way out of alignment, causing a decrease in tension on the engine sprocket.
I sure would like to go back to the old style (14 tootth) sprag clutch and to test my theory that the newer ones are problematic (or is it just the three I bought?).
Anybody have one they could part with? Lots of people removed the electric starter motor from Mark III's, and maybe some of those folks also pulled the sprag out too - and it's sitting on a shelf waiting for a new home?
Much appreciated if someone has one - new condition preferable, but used would be worth an experiment too.
Thanks,
Keith Kelly
