I have a 72 interstate with a fiberglass tank that is melting.
Tried caswell but the gas is still turning brown and gluing the carburetor slide etc.
I would like another Interstate steel tank but you all know how difficult that is.
Any Ideas?
Had bike since '75.
Thanks.

Where are you located? Caswell worked for me, with the gas we have here in Colorado.

Burton Bike Bits in the UK has "foreign made" reproduction Interstate tanks. I don't know what the quality is like, you may have some of the same issues as the Pakistani Roadster tanks, but that's an option.

Why not place an ad. in the forum "Wanted" section?

Would taking your tank to a boat repair/fiberglass shop be an option? It seems that they could cut the bottom out, clean, and repair the tank for less money than buying a new tank.

I share the same experience as Debby with Caswell. If there is a failure it is probably due to an inaccessible area that wasn't clean enough for the epoxy to adhere. Opening up the bottom should allow the experts to thoroughly clean and repair any "soft" spots and once it is clean and glassed back together a layer of Caswell's should be a permanent fix.

Just a thought.

Ebay would be my first resort....

Beware of ebay. You could end up paying a lot of money for something that looks like this when the paint and bondo is stripped off:

BTW I might be willing to sell this tank. Just "needs undented and resprayed" to use ebay vernacular!

There's something compellingly powerful about that tank Debby.

Have you ever thought of building a "grunge look" bike? Ebay has lots of parts with broken fins and lots of rust etc. to compliment the look for the bike. Grunge went over big in the fashion industry and the right fashion designer may pay a premium for such a bike. You wouldn't have to polish it either.

LOL

I've considered just spraying the tank flat black as is, and painting a bandaid on that side. I don't think I can afford to build a grunge bike though, I don't have enough parts to work with. It's a fun idea though.

My 850 was originally going to be the Rainy Day Norton, but the frame had nice new powder coating, the DPO did a really nice polishing job on the alloy, I had a very nice looking Roadster tank sitting on the shelf,...

Now it's a Sunny Day Norton! Just like my 750. That bike has actually seen a lot of rain though.
