I have been lucky to be able to do the bulk of the work on my bike in the garage, but boring and fitting 1 oversized valve guide is beyond my scope. PO had recently put in new valves . Was hoping not to ship but if that's the only course I'll take suggestions

I didn't know Jim had a website. Is he still fabricating parts? I noticed many of the parts he used to make for CnW have been unavailable for a while.
It would be a big loss for the Norton community if Jim quits making his essential replacement parts.

I would only trust a valve guide to someone who knows exactly what they are doing. And wouldn't care if I had to ship it. You have two excellent suggestions already!

I asked a similar question recently and the guys suggested QandE ( http://qande.com/site/ ) as the staff are familiar with Nortons. I'm in Redondo Beach so I will no doubt be using these guys as I'm build three bikes right now.

You might want to call Bill Getty at JRC Engineering in Perris or the people at John Calicchio's place, Triumph Classic Motorcycle in Costa Mesa and ask who they use.

If the guide is replaced the seat needs to be recut to match.

If you call Franz and Grubb they could let you know, they are in L.A.

I second FAG.
If in SoCal, and you prefer not to ship, call Dan. Quality machine work and a Kibblewhite dealer. Just visit his cool shop and you'll see his level of work and organization.

Without stating the obvious it needs to be someone familiar with the interference fit of a Norton Commando guide, especially if the guide bore is being oversized, set up is critical.
I am doing a Moto Guzzi head today, bore the head and then machine a oversize guide down to the required fit, you only get one 'go at it but first is the set up and jigs to hold the head.
At least on that head the guide bore and spring pad are in the open unlike a Norton head.

My vote would be Jim Comstock because I spent money with him (not heard it on the internet) and am happy with the work. (I checked it)

I bought parts off Dan for my 1957 TR6, he is Triumph only as far as I know but might have a recommendation locally.
