LH lockring removal/ front disc

I'm trying, and failing, to remove the bearing lockring for simple maintenance or replacement. The hub is stripped and in my vice. So far I've used a propane torch with a hammer and punch, I'll need to replace the ring, nbd, just need to know how much can I heat the hub with the torch before causing damage, if it will.
 
Its right hand thread on my 74 850. I used a small tapered punch to get it moving. They are not that tight [ usually ]. After re-installing, I used a flat punch to flatten the slight burrs caused by the tapered punch.

The above and after heating the hub real hot , drop an ice cube onto the steel ring ,then punch to start movings if no proper tool.
 
mine is alloy. Which one are we now talking about 'cause the one on the other side just fits in tight with a little swaging to help.

This is a '73 Commando with the disc on the right, which by all that I have read is actually a left hand thread. I've been mellow with the torch, two to three minutes, don't want to ruin something so difficult to find. So heat the hell out of it and the ice cube sounds good ?

With the disc on the right, the lock ring is on the left side of the hub-so is normal right hand thread as it says in the factory manual, Section H7.

Edit: but not in that copy :oops: it says "left hand thread" which is wrong!

Where did you read this? :?: :?: :?:

I've relaced a bunch of wheels with new rims and therefore have to take off the inner spacer to hold the wheel in the jig. Mine were all RH threads. I'm looking at 2 here next to the keyboard.

THE MKIII Front wheel has a circlip

REAR wheel speedo drive/bearing retainer is LH.
 
You are correct regarding the disc on the left, ring on the right. Reason I'm asking is that for over thirty years the only consistent reference I've had is my Clymer's manual and it has always ? been correct. The line reads
Unscrew the lock ring (left-hand thread) from the left side of the hub using norton tool
which I do not have. Anyway, I get it now, my book is wrong.

And it was wrong, proof being the ring is out, thanks all, made this one easy.

Think about it. The action of the wheel turning forwards, would have the tendency to turn the lockring in the opposite direction to wheel motion, so it necessarily follows that a lockring on the LHS will be a clockwise thread.

Note for 850 MkIII owners.

On the MkIII rear wheel, the lock ring is on the left, so it's right hand thread, however, some copies of the MkIII manual say: "Left hand thread".
 
Well, it wasn't broke, I just needed the hub for the new rim and spokes, the rear wheel was no problem and the book was wrong regarding the front. What do you do, never was one to ask questions, glad I did and now it'll be an easy find for the next guy. So thanks again.
